Introduction

The image naming convention for the Catalyst 5000 and 6000 ATM modules has changed with each major software release. This document provides a reference to better understand the image naming conventions for Cisco Catalyst 5000 and 6000 ATM modules.

Cisco uses code names within the engineered product development life cycle. These names were integrated into the names of Catalyst LAN ATM module images prior to ATM Module Release 12.x.

The Catalyst 5000 comprises two module lines which differ in their architecture and supported features:

  • Barney line:

    • OC-3: 5153, 5154, 5155, 5156, 5157, and 5158

    • DS-3: 5166

  • Truckee line:

    • OC-12: 5161 and 5162

    • OC-12: 5165 (Fabric Integration Module)

    • OC-3: 5167 and 5168

    • OC-12: 6101 for the Catalyst 6000

Note: Version 12.0 images have new features, such as fast-PHY (physical sublayer) switchover and Fast Simple Server Replication Protocol (FSSRP).

Barney Line

The Barney line of ATM modules consists of three separate images: LANE Image, Traffic Shaping Image, and Token Ring LANE.

LANE Image

  • The image name begins with c5atm-wblane - this means "workgroup Barney LANE version."

  • From Version 12.0(10)W5(18a), the image name begins with c5atm-wl-mz. In this case, wl means "workgroup LAN emulation (LANE)."

  • Supports Ethernet LANE only (does not support token-ring LANE).

  • Supports RFC 1483 non traffic-shaping permanent virtual connections (PVCs).

  • Does not support Multiprotocol over ATM (MPOA).

  • Versions were originally labeled 3.2(1) through 3.2(14). Versions now follow IOS-like names. For example, Version 11.2(11)P is the same as Version 3.2(7). With 12.0(10)W5(18), only IOS® versions label the filename. See this table for more information:

Traffic Shaping Image

  • The image name begins with c5atm-wbpvc, which means "workgroup Barney PVC version."

  • From Version 12.0(10)W5(18a), the image name begins with c5atm-wt-mz. Here, wt means "workgroup traffic shaping for PVCs."

  • Versions were originally labeled 51.1(1) and 51.1(2). Versions now follow IOS-like names. For example, Version 51.1(5) is now Version c5am-wbpvc.113-6.WA4.9d.bin.

  • Supports traffic shaping through configuration of a peak cell rate for ATM traffic class CBR PVCs.

Note: Version 51.1 allows you to set sustainable cell rate (SCR) and maximum burst size (MBS) values as if in the creation of a variable bit rate (VBR) PVC. Note that the Barney traffic-shaping images support only peak-cell rate based shaping on CBR PVCs. Cisco has corrected this parser error and removed the possibility of setting SCR and MBS.

Note: Version 12.0(10)W5(18a) is the first traffic-shaping image for the 12.0(x) software release train. The original plan was to release traffic-shaping images for the WS-X515x and WS-X5166 modules of 11.3(WA4)9d only. Since Version 11.3 never reached general deployment and was declared end of life (EOL), Cisco did not release traffic shaping images after 11.3(WA4)9d on the 11.3(x) train.

  • We strongly recommend that you run software Version 51.1(3) or higher.

Token Ring LANE

  • Image name begins with c5atm-trlane.

  • Versions are labeled 70.1.1, 70.1.2, and so on.

  • Requires Supervisor Version 4.3(1a) or higher.

  • We strongly recommend that you run Version 70.1(2) or higher.

Truckee Line

The Truckee line of Catalyst 5000 ATM modules comprises an Ethernet image and a Token Ring image.

  • The Ethernet image name begins with c5atm-wtall, which means "workgroup Truckee all modules," through Version 12.0(9)W5(17a). Subsequent images begin with c5atm-lc-mz. Here, lc means "line card."

The Truckee modules support MPOA, LANE, and RFC 1483 with traffic-shaping. Unlike the Barney modules, the same software image supports all three features.

  • The Token Ring image for Token Ring LANE uses image names that start with c5atm-wtoken.

  • The show version command originally displayed this information for the image name:

    ATM#show version
    Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software
    IOS (tm) C5kATM Software (TKE-A-M), Version 11.3(10)WA4(13a)

The show version command displays the actual image name as of release 12.0(13)W5(19).

    ATM#show version
    Cisco Internetwork Operating System Software
    IOS (tm) C5kATM Software (C5ATM-LC-M), Version 12.0(16)W5(21)

  • Release 12.1(2)E1 introduces LANE quality of service (QoS) features on the WS-X5161-OC-12 MMF and WS-X5162-OC-12 SMF only.

  • Release 12.1(8a)E introduces LANE QoS features on all Truckee modules.

For all modules, the CLI can allow you to define both Token Ring LECs and Ethernet LECs on the same module, but this configuration is not supported.

Upgrade Information

Refer to these resources in order to upgrade your Catalyst 5000 ATM modules:

Refer to ATM Module Management for a description of the upgrade procedure.

Catalyst 6000

The WS-X6101-OC12-MMF (multimode fiber) and single-mode fiber (SMF) ATM modules for the Catalyst 6000 are derived from Truckee and are enhanced with a more powerful processor. The image name starts with c6atm-lc-mz and follows the Truckee 12.0(x) naming convention. See the Catalyst 5000 Truckee Line for more information.

Cisco IOS Release 12.0XS1 introduced support for the Catalyst 6000 family switch ATM module. We recommend that you run Cisco IOS Release 12.1(8a)E or higher on these modules. Refer to the Catalyst 6000 Family Release Notes.

Cisco IOS Release 12.0(5)XS and later requires that the Supervisor Engine run software release 5.3.2 or later. Supervisor engine software release 5.3.1 recognizes the ATM module but does not support it. Do not use Supervisor Engine software release 5.3.1 with Cisco IOS Releases 12.0(5)XS, 12.0(5)XS1, 12.1(2)E2, 12.1(8a)E, or later.

The WS-X6101 is not supported by Cisco IOS for the Supervisor Engine and the MSFC. It is only supported in "hybrid" mode when you run Catalyst software on the Supervisor Engine and Cisco IOS software only on the MSFC.
