This document provides information about how to collect statistics with the Statistics Collection Manager (SCM).

There are no specific requirements for this document.

Components Used

The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:

  • Cisco WAN Manager 11.0

  • Cisco WAN Manager 10.5

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Overview

These steps provide an overview of the process to collect statistics data from switches:

  1. Understand the SCM architecture.

  2. Design and deploy the SCM architecture on your network.

  3. Configure the switches.

  4. Tune the SCM configuration files.

  5. Start SCM, and ensure that the Cisco WAN Manager server synchronizes with your network and that the server knows all your nodes.

    Note: For a large network, refer to the document Understand Network Synchronization.

  6. Select and enable the statistics that you want to collect on the nodes.

  7. Start the collection with the design of your SCM architecture as a basis.

  8. Verify the collection of the statistics. Refer to the document Troubleshoot Statistic Collection Architecture.

This document and the documents that it references provide you with the information necessary to understand the entire statistics collection process in detail.

Understand the SCM Architecture

For the best usage of this Cisco WAN Manager subsystem, you must understand each component that constitutes SCM. Refer to the document Statistic Collection Manager Architecture.

Design and Deploy the SCM Architecture on Your Network

With your needs and your network as a basis, you must understand how to deploy SCM. The minimum configuration is one main Cisco WAN Manager server that uses the embedded SCM. This configuration works, but there is no redundancy. The embedded SCM can also collect statistics for a maximum of 200 nodes (with respect to performances). If your requirements mention redundancy, you require a more robust architecture. For more information, refer to the document Statistic Collection Design and Sizing.

An automatic installation of the embedded SCM occurs at the installation of Cisco WAN Manager. The installation of standalone SCM is a separate installation.

  • Version 10.4—Only collector

  • Version 10.5 and 11.0—Both collector and parser

These documents provide information about the exact procedure:

Configure the Switches

Configure the switches to let SCM collect statistics files. A few steps are mandatory:

  • Time setup

  • IP configuration

  • Statistics Master configuration

  • SNMP configuration

Tune SCM Configuration Files

The number of history files to collect, dual collection, and the maximum number of nodes that a collector manages are some of the parameters that you can tune in the SCM configuration files. For more information, refer to the document Statistic Collection Configuration Files.

Start the SCM Processes

On the server, the SCM processes start upon Cisco WAN Manager core startup with the use of the Cisco WAN Manager script.

On the standalone SCM, processes start with the use of the SCM script.

Start Statistics Collection

This operation requires three steps:

  1. Configure the statistics database parameters.

  2. Select and enable the statistics that you want to collect on the nodes.

  3. Start the collection with the design of your SCM architecture as a basis.

Statistics Collection on Nodes with a Private Network Network Interface (PNNI) Basis

Cisco WAN Manager users are likely familiar with statistics collection on legacy nodes such as BPX, IGX, MGX 8220, and MGX 8250/8850 version 1. These users are probably less familiar with MGX 8850/8950 with PXM-45. There have been some changes on these new platforms. Troubleshoot the Collection

There are many causes of problems that occur when you collect statistics. For more details, refer to the document Troubleshoot Statistic Collection Architecture.

Improve Your SCM

With your needs as a basis, and after some experience, you can improve several areas in your SCM architecture.

  • Database sizing—It is difficult to evaluate how quickly your database fills up. Monitor the databases with use of the onstat -d command and, if necessary, increase the size of that database. Also, determine the need to collect all the statistics that you enabled on the switches. If some statistics are unnecessary, disable them to save database space and increase the performance of your system. If you must change the size of your Stratacom database, refer to the document How To Change the Size of the Cisco WAN Manager Database.

  • scmproxy (Refer to the document How to Use scmproxy Script.)—You can use this script to automate some operations.
