Getting Started with Management Center for IDS Sensors (IDS MC)

Installation instructions for IDS MC are available in a separate publication, entitled Installing Management Center for IDS Sensors 1.2 and Monitoring Center for Security 1.2, which contains more information on the following topics:

  • Installation—You must install CiscoWorks Common Services before installing IDS MC.

Caution   Do not attempt to install IDS MC on a host on which CSPM has been installed because the installer for Security Monitor will attempt to install the Cisco Intrusion Detection System postoffice in a second location on that host.

  • Getting started—You must start CiscoWorks Common Services before starting IDS MC.
  • Web browsersYou must enable cookies and Java for whichever web browser you use as the web client. You can choose either of two web browsers:
    • Netscape® Navigator 4.7 or later.

Starting IDS MC from the CiscoWorks Desktop

IDS MC runs on Windows 2000 platforms as a web server. Use the CiscoWorks interface to log in to IDS MC using whichever web browser you have chosen to use as the web client. After logging in through CiscoWorks, you can view the IDS MC interface.

Five types of accounts, or authorization roles, are available in IDS MC. Use these accounts to delegate different responsibilities to different network users. For example: Specify who can generate configurations, and specify who can approve configurations.

Note   A network administrator account must have already been created in CiscoWorks before you can log in to IDS MC for the first time.

Tip Create and delete other accounts as necessary in CiscoWorks.

  • Help Desk—Privileges for this type of account are read-only for the entire system. Using this type of account, an administrator can view any report or alarm but cannot delete reports or alarms and cannot generate reports.
  • Approver—Privileges for this type of account are the privilege to approve configurations and read-only for the rest of the system. Using this type of account, an administrator can view any report or alarm but cannot delete reports or alarms and cannot generate reports.
  • Network Operator—Privileges for this type of account are read-only for the entire system and the privilege to deploy configurations. Using this type of account, an administrator can view any report or alarm, delete reports and alarms, and generate reports.
  • Network Administrator—Privileges for this type of account are read-only for the entire system and the privilege to edit devices and device groups.
  • System Administrator—Using this type of account, an administrator can edit anything in the system, view any report or alarm, delete reports and alarms, generate reports, and import lists (files) and notification scripts.

Tip You can install Cisco Secure Access Control Server for additional levels of authorization and authentication.
