Preparing to Use IDS MC and Security Monitor


This chapter describes how to log into CiscoWorks and how to verify installations of Management Center for IDS Sensors (IDS MC) and Monitoring Center for Security (Security Monitor). It contains the following sections:

Client System Requirements

You can access all product features from a client that fulfills the hardware, software, and browser requirements. Table 4-1 shows client hardware and software requirements.

IBM PC-compatible computer with 300 MHz or faster Pentium processor running one of the following:

  • Windows 2000 Server
  • Windows 2000 Server or Professional Edition with Service Pack 3
  • Windows XP, Service Pack 1 with Microsoft Virtual Machine
  • Solaris SPARCstation or Sun Ultra 10 with a 333MHz processor running the Solaris 2.8 operating system

Note IDS MC and Security Monitor support only the US English versions of these operating systems.

Hard Drive Space

  • 400 MB virtual memory (for Windows)
  • 512 MB swap space (for Solaris)

Memory

256 MB, minimum

Web Browser

You must also install one of the following HTML browsers:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0, Service Pack 1 on Windows operating systems.
  • Netscape Navigator 4.79 on either of the following:
    • Windows 2000 Server or Professional Edition with Service Pack 3
    • Windows XP, Service Pack 3 with Microsoft Virtual Machine
  • Netscape Navigator 4.76 for Solaris

Logging into CiscoWorks

The CiscoWorks Server desktop is the interface for the CiscoWorks network management applications, including Security Monitor, IDS MC, and Firewall MC. For additional information about the CiscoWorks Server desktop, see User Guide for CiscoWorks Common Services 2.2.

Before you log in, make sure that your browser is configured correctly for CiscoWorks. For more information, see Installation and Setup Guide for CiscoWorks Common Services (includes CiscoView) on Windows or Installation and Setup Guide for CiscoWorks Common Services (includes CiscoView) on Solaris.


Note   If you have installed CiscoWorks and are logging in for the first time, you can use the "admin" username with the password you configured during installation. If you did not change the password for the "admin" account during installation, use the default password "admin" (without the quotation marks).

To log into CiscoWorks, follow these steps:


Step 1   Access the CiscoWorks Server from your web browser.

The CiscoWorks Server login page appears.


Step 2   Enter your username in the Name field and your password in the Password field.

Step 3   Click Connect, or press Enter.

The CiscoWorks Server navigation menu replaces the Login Manager pane. You are now logged in.





Verifying IDS MC and Security Monitor Installations

You can verify successful installations of IDS MC and Security Monitor from the CiscoWorks desktop. This section contains the following:

Verifying IDS MC Installation

IDS MC is accessible from the CiscoWorks Server desktop.

To verify that IDS MC is installed, follow these steps:


Step 1   Log into CiscoWorks.

Step 2   Select VPN/Security Management Solution > Management Center > IDS Sensors.


If IDS Sensors appears on the desktop, you have successfully installed IDS MC.





Verifying Security Monitor Installation

Security Monitor is accessible from the CiscoWorks Server desktop.

To verify that Security Monitor is installed, follow these steps:


Step 1   Log into CiscoWorks.

Step 2   Select VPN/Security Management Solution > Monitoring Center >
Security Monitor
.


If Security Monitor appears on the desktop, you have successfully installed Security Monitor.





Verifying Installation by Checking Package Options

You can verify the installation of IDS MC and Security Monitor in the Packages Installed section of the About the Server page from the CiscoWorks Server desktop.

To verify installation from the About the Server page, follow these steps:


Step 1   Log into CiscoWorks.

Step 2   Select Server Configuration > About the Server > Applications and Versions.

The About the Server page appears.

Step 3   Scroll to the Applications Installed section of the About the Server page to verify that IDS MC and Security Monitor appear in the Applications Installed list.
