This chapter describes preparing to install and installing TrafficDirector on an HP-UX system. It consists of:

Installation Notes

Before beginning the installation, consider the following:

  • The TrafficDirector installation takes approximately five minutes.

  • Successful use of TrafficDirector depends on your system being properly configured.

  • Ensure that you know the root password for your system. You must perform the installation as the root user.

  • Ensure that you know the absolute path of the executable for your web browser, and that the browser meets the requirements noted in the "Web Browser Requirements" section.

  • TrafficDirector is installed in the default directory /opt/CSCOtd5. If you select another directory during the installation, TrafficDirector is installed there instead.

Caution   It is strongly recommended that you use the default installation path of /opt/CSCOtd5. If you wish to override the default and install the software in a preexisting location, you must install the software in a directory subordinate to that location (for example, /alternate_location/CSCOtd5).

  • Appendix A describes how to set up a SQL database.

  • Appendix B lists the directories created during the installation.

  • Appendix C describes how to mount and unmount a CD-ROM.

  • Appendix D lists the additional protocols supported in TrafficDirector.

Preparing to Install TrafficDirector

The following sections describe prerequisites and other factors you should consider before installing TrafficDirector.

Web Browser Requirements

To view the online help, you must install a web browser on the UNIX workstation on which TrafficDirector will be installed. This installation supports Netscape Navigator 4.75.

Minimum System Requirements

Table 2-1 shows the minimum system requirements for TrafficDirector.

You must install CiscoWorks2000 CD One first if you are upgrading to Campus Manager 3.1. For more information, see Installing and Setting Up CiscoWorks2000 CD One on HP-UX.

Upgrading to TrafficDirector 5.8.2

Note   You can upgrade to TrafficDirector 5.8.2 on systems running TrafficDirector 5.7.x or later.

TrafficDirector 5.8.2 is an independent solution that you can use in conjunction with other CiscoWorks2000 management solutions. If the standalone version of TrafficDirector is installed on your system and you want to upgrade to TrafficDirector 5.8.2, follow the procedure described in the "Installing TrafficDirector" section. TrafficDirector 5.8.2 overrides the previous version.

Installing TrafficDirector

Caution   If you are installing TrafficDirector as part of the upgrade to the Campus Manager 3.1 package, you must install CiscoWorks2000 CD One before you install TrafficDirector. For more information, see Installing and Setting Up CiscoWorks2000 CD One, 4th Edition on HP-UX.

Step 1   Insert the TrafficDirector CD-ROM into a CD-ROM drive.

Step 2   Log into the system as root.

Step 3   Make sure the CD-ROM is mounted.

Step 4   To change directories, enter this command:

cd /cdrom/disk1

Step 5   To run the installation script, enter this command:


Note   To stop the installation procedure at any time, press Ctrl-C. This command terminates the last UNIX command you entered and returns you to the shell prompt. Continue the installation by reentering the last UNIX command, or discontinue the installation procedure.

Step 6   If you are installing TrafficDirector for the first time, the installation script prompts you to enter the product location. Accept the default location of /opt/CSCOtd5 or enter an alternate installation location and go to
Step 10.

Caution   It is strongly recommended that you use the default installation path of /opt/CSCOtd5. To override the default and install the software in a preexisting location, you must install TrafficDirector in a directory subordinate to that location (for example, /alternate_location/CSCOtd5).

If a previous version of TrafficDirector is already installed on your system, this message appears:

If you proceed, Setup will archive key data in the current versions of 
TrafficDirector prior to removing them from the server. As this setup 
completes and you proceed to install programs of the new versions of 
Resource Management Essentials and/or Campus TrafficDirector the data 
archived by this Setup program can be imported to the new version. If 
you do not want older versions impacted at this time, exit this setup 
program and restart it on a server that does not have the above 
products loaded on it.
Do you want to proceed (y/n)? [y]

Step 7   Press Enter to continue.

The installation script prompts you to enter the location where the data
from the current versions will be backed up. The default directory is /opt/CW2000/OldData.

Step 8   To choose the default location, press Enter or enter a different path where the data will be backed up.

This message appears:

Uninstall TrafficDirector (y/n)? [y]

Step 9   To uninstall the previous version of TrafficDirector, enter Y, or enter N to abort the installation.

Step 10   At the following prompt, enter the full Netscape browser executable pathname:

Enter the full netscape browser executable pathname: ? 

Caution   The installation procedure does not allow you to leave this information blank, but it does allow you to specify an incorrect location during the installation. The installation procedure recognizes the location as incorrect, but allows you to continue.

You must correct this after completing the installation. If you set the browser path incorrectly, users cannot use the online help. See the
"Configuring a Web Browser" section for configuration instructions.

To accept the default location, press Enter, or enter the absolute path to your installed web browser.

Step 11   At the following prompt, confirm that the installation location and browser executable path are correct:

Are these values correct (y/n)? [y]

Step 12   If correct, press Enter, or enter N to change the information.

If the installation finds data backed up from a previous version, this message appears:

Setup has detected that some data was backed up from the previous 
Traffic Director installation.
Would you like to restore the data (y/n)? [y]

Step 13   Enter Y to restore the data or N to ignore it.

The installation script unpackages the files, extracts them to the installation location you specified, then performs the installation.

When the installation is complete, these messages appear:

Installation completed.
The file /opt/CSCOtd5/ or .traffdir.cshrc contains the 
shell cmds required to set the environment for running 
The file /opt/CSCOtd5/X/RMONmanager is the application resource file 
for TrafficDirector. You may want to modify this file in order to 
customize the application, for example, to change the screen
background colors. To start traffic director from a shell command line, follow these steps: 1) Make sure your DISPLAY variable is set correctly, and X binaries are in your path 2) Issue the command: For csh: % (source /opt/CSCOtd5/.traffdir.cshrc ; /opt/CSCOtd5/bin/tdir)& For sh or ksh: # (. /opt/CSCOtd5/ ; /opt/CSCOtd5/bin/tdir)& (Do not forget the dot at the beginning followed by space)

Step 14   Enter the appropriate command to unmount the CD-ROM.

Step 15   Remove the CD-ROM from the drive.

Step 16   Log out of the root account

Configuring a Web Browser

To effectively use the online help feature, you must install
and configure a web browser on your system and create a link that points to
the browser.

Caution   The TrafficDirector installation is performed by root (and, therefore, the files are owned by root). Therefore, you must make these changes while logged into the system as root.

If you did not configure a web browser during the installation, you can set up the link now.

Edit the /opt/CSCOtd5/.traffdir.cshrc or /opt/CSCOtd5/ file and add a line similar to the following that points to the location of your web browser:

setenv HTMLBINinstall_path

where install_path is the absolute path of the web browser executable.

For example, if your browser is installed in your home directory, your path would look similar to the following:

setenv HTMLBIN /home/netscape/netscape

Starting and Using TrafficDirector

To start TrafficDirector in the background:

Step 1   Make sure your DISPLAY variable is set correctly and X binaries are in your path.

Step 2   Enter this command:

  • For csh:

    %(source /opt/CSCOtd5/.traffdir.cshrc ; /opt/CSCOtd5/bin/tdir)&
  • For sh or ksh:

    #(. /opt/CSCOtd5/ ; /opt/CSCOtd5/bin/tdir)&

TrafficDirector main window opens.

Shutting Down TrafficDirector

When TrafficDirector is running, the dbchkd daemon launches all daemons responsible for logging and reporting. At regular intervals, dbchkd verifies that all logging and reporting daemons are running, and if necessary, restarts daemons that are not running, thereby ensuring the integrity of logging and reporting.

If you need to shut down TrafficDirector, when you close the TrafficDirector main window (using File > Exit from the menu bar), a confirmation window is displayed, asking if you want to shut down all daemons.

Do one of the following:

  • Click Yes to shut down all daemons and suspend all logging. This does not affect information currently logged and counters are not reset. Logging continues when you restart TrafficDirector.

  • Click No to allow all daemons to continue running and logging in the background even though TrafficDirector is not running.

  • Copy /opt/CSCOtd5/S83rmonmgr to /sbin/init.d

    • To shut down all daemons, enter /init.d/S83rmonmgr Stop

    • To start all daemons, enter /init.d/S83rmonmgr Start

Disabling Daemon Shutdown Confirmation Message

You can disable the daemon shutdown message that appears when you shut down TrafficDirector #

Step 1   Change directory to $NSHOME/usr.

Step 2   Use a text editor to open the default.dvp file.

Step 3   Locate the text string (Do you want to shut down all daemons?)..

Step 4   Disable the display of the confirmation message by replacing the default value of Yes with No.

Step 5   Save the change.

Note   Disabling this message does not impact logging or reporting. All daemons continue to run and logging and reporting are enabled.

Post-Installation Tasks

After you have installed TrafficDirector, verified that you can open it on your network management station, and configured a SQL server database for logging data for create trend reports:

Step 1   Configure the management software so that devices performing data collection are recognized.

Step 2   Define the type of data to be monitored, including protocols, topologies, and views of network traffic.

Step 3   Establish how much data you want to capture for real-time monitoring, including any limits and associated actions.

Step 4   Configure alert messages and parameters so they are triggered when established limits are reached.

Step 5   Determine the content and appearance of printed statistical reports.

Step 6   Modify the default aging, baseline, and utilization parameters, if necessary.

Removing TrafficDirector

Step 1   Shut down TrafficDirector.

Step 2   Click Yes to shut down all TrafficDirector-related daemons.

Step 3   Log into the system as root.

Step 4   Insert the TrafficDirector CD-ROM into a CD-ROM drive.

Step 5   Make sure the CD-ROM is mounted.

Step 6   To change directories, enter this command:

cd /cdrom/disk1


Step 7   To run the uninstallation script, enter this command:


Step 8   To continue with the uninstallation, at the following prompt enter Y, or enter N and press Enter to cancel the uninstallation:

Delete the tdir packages? (y/n)? [y] 

The uninstallation procedure continues.

Caution   The uninstallation procedure does not remove any files created after the TrafficDirector installation (for example, configuration data, user data, and so on). You must remove this data manually. Note, however, that you cannot recover this data after you have removed it.

Reinstalling TrafficDirector

To reinstall TrafficDirector on HP-UX systems, follow the procedures in the "Installing TrafficDirector" section.
