Introduction

This document describes the license renewal process for a Nexus 7000 Series Switch.

Background Information

The Nexus 7000 Series Switch has various features that are binded with the license. To use these features, you need to have a license installed. The evaluation license is a temporary license that lasts for a limited time period and is used for testing various features. When the evaluation period has ended, a permanent license can be obtained and installed. This document describes how to renew an evaluation license without affecting any of the NX-OS features, such as OSPF and BGP.

Problem 1

In this scenario, an evaluation license for a Nexus 7000 Series Switch will expire in 24 hours. While the license is being updated, this error occurs: Installing license failed: A license with a later/different expiry date already exists for feature.

The requirement is that the features enabled in the evaluation period should not be affected.

Solution 1

When you have a live Nexus 7000 Series Switch which cannot be disrupted because it is using features binded with the evaluation period license (for example, OSPF and BGP), perform this procedure to renew the evaluation license:

1. In order to verify that the license files exist for the device, issue the Show license brief and show license usage commands:

   Nexus-OS#Show license brief
   ENTERPRISELicense.lic
   ENTERPRISELicense1.lic

   switch#show license usage

2. If you install the new license by issuing the install license bootflash:license_file.lic command, you will be prompted with this error:

   switch#install license bootflash:license_file.lic
   Installing license failed: A license with a later/different expiry date 
   already exists for feature
   

3. If you encounter this error, update the existing license instead of installing the license as you would when a fresh Nexus 7000 Series Switch is configured for its license-binded features. Perform these steps to update the existing license:

   switch#update license bootflash:Enterprise1.lic Enterprise.lic
   Do you want to continue? (y/n) y
   Updating license ..done
   switch#
   

Problem 2

While installing or updating the license, this error message may be received:

Installing license failed: SERVER line in license should
	 have "this_host ANY"

Solution 2

If you install the license by issuing the install license bootflash:license_file.lic command, you may see this error:

Switch7k#install license bootflash:license_file.lic
Installing license failed: SERVER line in license should have "this_host ANY"

Perform these steps in order to resolve this problem:

1. Open the .lic file and copy and paste its content into a notepad file, and save it as type "all files" (encoding ANSI).

2. Install the license:

   Switch7k#install license bootflash:license_file.lic
