Introduction

This article is one in a series to assist in the setup, troubleshooting, and maintenance of Cisco Small Business products (formerly Linksys Business Series).

Q. How do I upgrade the Linksys VOIP Router's firmware?

A.

Note: Verify the model number and the suffix of your Linksys VOIP router before trying to update the firmware to ensure that you'll get the correct file. If the suffix is -NA, proceed with the upgrade. If not, the firmware loaded to the router will come from the VOIP provider. Loading the Linksys firmware will nullify the voice settings of the router.

The following are the possible suffixes:

  • -VD
  • -AT
  • -AD
  • -AL
  • -NA

The new firmware adds numerous functions to the router. To upgrade the firmware of your router you need to perform two steps:

Downloading the Firmware

Step 1:
Before downloading the firmware, make sure your computer has an active Internet connection. If your computer is plugged directly into the router and cannot get online, disconnect your router and plug your computer directly into your cable or DSL modem.

Step 2:
To go to the Linksys download page, click here and verify the model and version number of your Linksys product. For instructions, click the link How to find Model number.

Step 3:
After obtaining the model number of the Linksys router, enter the model number in the Enter Model Number field, then click GO

Step 4:
Look for Locate Version Number and select the version of the Linksys product from the drop-down menu.

Note: In this example we used RT31P2. The image may vary depending on the model number of the Linksys product.

Step 5:
Click Firmware to download the latest firmware file.

Step 6:
If you are using Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and Internet Explorer, you may see a "Pop-up blocked" message in your browser Information Bar. Click the bar and select Temporarily Allow Pop-ups then click  Firmware again.

Step 7:
Click Save in the File Download dialog box that appears. Look for the  Save As dialog box, choose a location for the file like the Desktop and click Save. When the download is complete, click Close, if prompted.

Note: The name of the file may vary depending on the firmware file of your router.

Step 8:
If the firmware file you have downloaded is in zip format, double-click the zip file and extract its contents to a single folder or to the Desktop.

Note: You will need to use a utility to open and extract files from the ZIP file archive such as WinZipregTag;. To download WinZipregTag;, visit http://www.winzip.com. You can also use the built-in unzipping features of Windows XP to unzip the contents from the archive.

Contact your VOIP provider for assistance in reloading the latest firmware of the router since the firmware is proprietary to your VOIP provider.
