Cable and Port Pinouts
This appendix lists the pinouts for the Ethernet cable connector and ports on the Catalyst 8540 CSR route processor. This section also lists the Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) cable distances and module bandwidths. It includes the following sections:
•
Ethernet Cable Connector Pinouts
•
MT-RJ Ethernet Connector Pinouts
•
Console Port Pinouts
•
GBIC Cable Distances and Modal Bandwidths
Note
Pins not listed are not connected.
Ethernet Cable Connector Pinouts
The Ethernet ports on the route processor and the 10/100BaseT interface module are RJ-45 receptacles. Table B-1 lists the Ethernet cable connector pinouts.
Note
The Ethernet port on the route processor is not routable.

Note
To connect a Catalyst 8540 CSR chassis to a router (such as the Cisco 7500 router) use a straight-through unshielded twisted pair (UTP) cable. To connect the chassis to a switch (such as the Catalyst 5500 switch), use a crossover UTP cable.
MT-RJ Ethernet Connector Pinouts
The Ethernet ports on the 100BaseFX interface module are MT-RJ receptacles. Table B-2 lists the Ethernet cable connector pinouts.

Console Port Pinouts
The console port on the route processor is an EIA/TIA-232 DCE DB-25 receptacle. Both data set ready (DSR) and data carrier detect (DCD) are active when the system is running. The Request To Send (RTS) signal tracks the state of the Clear To Send (CTS) input. The console port does not support modem control or hardware flow control. The console port requires a straight-through EIA/TIA-232 cable. Table B-3 lists the console port pinouts.

GBIC Cable Distances and Modal Bandwidths
A GBIC has two pinouts: receive and transmit. The connectors are multimode fiber or single-mode fiber. Table B-4 lists the cable distances and modal bandwidth for GBICs.
