Checking the Installation

This chapter describes the LEDs used to confirm and troubleshoot operation of the route processor, switch processors, and interface modules and includes the following sections:

Confirming the Installation

Problems with the initial startup are often caused by an interface module or power supply that has become dislodged from the backplane or chassis power connector. Although over-temperature conditions rarely occur at initial startup, the environmental monitoring functions are included because they also monitor DC line voltages. At the initial system boot, verify the following:

  • The power supplies are installed properly and are supplying power to the system.

  • The system fan assembly is operating.

  • The system software boots successfully.

  • The route processor, switch processors, and interface modules are properly installed in their slots, and each is initialized without problems.

When these conditions are met, the hardware installation is complete. If the startup sequence fails before these conditions are met, use the procedures in this chapter to isolate and, if possible, resolve the problem.

If you are unable to solve a problem, contact a customer service representative for assistance and further instructions. Before you call, gather the following information:

  • Date you received the components

  • Component serial number (see label on the front of the component)

  • Type of software and release number

  • Brief description of the problem

  • Brief explanation of the steps taken to isolate and resolve the problem

  • Maintenance agreement or warranty information

Troubleshooting Interface Modules

Your interface module went through extensive testing and burn-in before leaving the factory; however, if your system appears to have problems starting up, use the information in this chapter to help isolate the cause.

When you have completed the troubleshooting procedures in this chapter, continue with the following interface module troubleshooting steps:

Component Troubleshooting Flowchart

The flowchart in Figure 4-1 helps you determine which component might
have malfunctioned.

Route Processor and Switch Processor LEDs

This section describes the LEDs used to confirm and troubleshoot the operation of the route processor and switch processors. The LEDs on the route processor indicate the status of the processor, the Flash PC Card slots, and the interface ports. Figure 4-2 shows the route processor LEDs. Table 4-1 describes them.

Orange

Tx (Transmit)

Flashing green

Ethernet packets are being transmitted. The pulse rate increases with the data rate.

Rx (Receive)

Flashing green

Ethernet packets are being received. The pulse rate increases with the data rate.

Off

No signal is being received.

Link

Green

The Ethernet port is operational.

Off

No signal is detected on the Ethernet port.

Interface Module LEDs

This section describes the LEDs used to confirm and troubleshoot the operation of interface modules. The LEDs on interface modules indicate the status of the modules and their ports.

Eight-Port Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module LEDs

Figure 4-4 shows the Catalyst 8540 CSR eight-port Gigabit Ethernet interface module LEDs. Table 4-3 describes them.

Two-Port Enhanced Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module LEDs

ATM Uplink with Enhanced Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module

Figure 4-9 shows the LEDs for the ATM OC-12c uplink with enhanced Gigabit Ethernet interface module. The LEDs are the same for ATM OC-3c and OC-12c uplink ports. Table 4-8 describes these LEDs.

Carrier detect signal.

Packet-over-SONET Uplink with Enhanced Gigabit Ethernet Interface Module

Figure 4-10 shows the Catalyst 8540 CSR Packet-over-SONET OC-12c uplink with enhanced Gigabit Ethernet interface module LEDs. Table 4-9 describes these LEDs.
