About This Guide

This preface describes who should read the LightStream 1010 ATM Switch ASP Installation Guide, how it is organized, and its document conventions.

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more up to date than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. Who Should Read This Guide

This guide provides information specific to initial installation and configuration of the switch hardware and software. To use this guide, you should be familiar with electronic circuitry and wiring practices and have experience as an electronic or electromechanical technician.

The major sections of this guide are as follows:

Chapter 3	Configuring the ASP	Describes the initial configuration of the ASP
Chapter 4	Checking the ASP Installation	Describes the procedures to check the hardware installation and initial configuration of the ASP
Appendix A	Maintaining the ASP	Describes the maintenance procedures for the ASP
Appendix B	ASP Specifications	Describes the ASP specifications
Appendix C	ASP Cable and Port Pinouts	Lists the pinouts for the Ethernet cable connector and the ports on the ASP
Appendix D	Translated Safety Warnings	Lists translations of the warnings that appear in this guide

Document Conventions

Command descriptions use the following conventions:

boldface font	Commands and keywords are in boldface.
italic font	Arguments for which you supply values are in italics.
[ ]	Elements in square brackets are optional.
{ x \| y \| z }	Alternative keywords are grouped in braces and separated by vertical bars.
[ x \| y \| z ]	Optional alternative keywords are grouped in brackets and separated by vertical bars.
string	A nonquoted set of characters. Do not use quotation marks around the string or the string will include the quotation marks.

Screen examples use the following conventions:

`screen` font	Terminal sessions and information the system displays are in `screen` font.
boldface screen font	Information you must enter is in boldface screen font.
italic screen font	Arguments for which you supply values are in italic screen font.
	This pointer highlights an important line of text in an example.
^	The symbol ^ represents the key labeled Control—for example, the key combination ^D in a screen display means hold down the Control key while you press the D key.
< >	Nonprinting characters, such as passwords are in angle brackets.
[ ]	Default responses to system prompts are in square brackets.
!, #	An exclamation point (!) or a pound sign (#) at the beginning of a line of code indicates a comment line.

Network management interfaces use the following conventions:

Command paths in a graphical user interface (GUI) are indicated as follows: Action>Reports>Switch Detail
On NT systems, use the left mouse button to select and drag an icon to a new location.
On UNIX systems, use the middle mouse button to select and drag an icon to a new location.
Screen displays might differ slightly from those included in this guide depending on the window system you are using. For example, Windows NT screens are different from HP OpenView screens.

Notes use the following conventions:

Note Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to material not covered in the publication.

Timesavers use the following conventions:

TimeSaver Means the described action saves time. You can save time by performing the action described in the paragraph.

Tips use the following conventions:

Tips
Means the following are useful tips.

Cautions use the following conventions:

Caution Means reader be careful. In this situation, you might do something that could result in equipment damage or loss of data.

Warnings use the following conventions:

Warning This warning symbol means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, you must be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents. To see translated versions of the warning, refer to the appendix "Translated Safety Warnings."
