This document describes the procedure to install Cisco 2691 routers in a rack. Use this document in conjunction with the Cisco 2600 Series Hardware Installation Guide and the Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information document for your router.

Safety Recommendations

Follow these guidelines to ensure general safety:

• Keep the chassis area clear and dust-free during and after installation.
  
  
• Do not wear loose clothing that could get caught in the chassis. Fasten your tie or scarf and roll up your sleeves.
  
  
• Wear safety glasses when working under any conditions that might be hazardous to your eyes.
  
  
• Do not perform any action that creates a potential hazard to people or makes the equipment unsafe.
  
  

Warning Means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and be familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents. FCC Class A Compliance

The equipment described in this document generates and may radiate radio-frequency energy. If it is not installed in accordance with Cisco installation instructions, it may cause interference with radio and television reception. This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a
Class A digital device in accordance with the specifications in part 15 of the FCC rules. These specifications are designed to provide reasonable protection against such interference in a residential installation. However, there is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a particular installation.

You can determine whether your equipment is causing interference by turning it off. If the interference stops, it was probably caused by the Cisco equipment or one of its peripheral devices. If the equipment causes interference to radio or television reception, try to correct the interference by using one or more of the following measures:

• Turn the television or radio antenna until the interference stops.
  
  
• Move the equipment to one side or the other of the television or radio.
  
  
• Move the equipment farther away from the television or radio.
  
  
• Plug the equipment into an outlet that is on a different circuit from the television or radio. (That is, make certain that the equipment and the television or radio are on circuits controlled by different circuit breakers or fuses.)
  
  

Modifications to this product not authorized by Cisco Systems, Inc. could void the FCC approval and negate your authority to operate the product.

Rack-Mounting the Chassis

This section describes the procedures for attaching the mounting brackets and rack-mounting the chassis. The chassis comes with brackets for use with a 19-inch rack or, if specified in your order, optional larger brackets for use with a 23-inch rack. Figure 1 shows the 19-inch bracket and Figure 2 shows the 23-inch brackets.

Note   The slots in the wide bracket are for securing cables with cable ties.

Attaching the Brackets

Attach the mounting brackets to the chassis as shown, using the screws provided in the bracket kit. Attach the second bracket to the opposite side of the chassis. Use a number 2 Phillips screwdriver to install the bracket screws.

Note   Be sure to attach the wider bracket (marked RIGHT) to the side with the cooling fans. This provides extra clearance for cooling air.

Note   The following illustrations show how to attach the bracket to one side of the chassis. The second bracket attaches to the opposite side of the chassis.

Note   Left and right on the Cisco 2600 routers are defined as viewed with the bezel facing you.

Note   When installed in a 19-inch rack with a 17.75-inch opening, the Cisco 2691 routers protrude beyond the front of the rack.

Installing the Router in a Rack

You can mount the Cisco 2691 router in a 19-inch rack with the following rack openings and chassis orientations:

• Center mounting—Brackets attached in the center of the chassis with either front panel or rear panel facing forward
  
  
• Front mounting—Brackets attached at the front of the chassis with the front panel facing forward
  
  
• Rear mounting—Brackets attached at the rear of the chassis with the rear panel facing forward
  
  

Warning To prevent bodily injury when mounting or servicing this unit in a rack, you must take special precautions to ensure that the system remains stable. The following guidelines are provided to ensure your safety:

• This unit should be mounted at the bottom of the rack if it is the only unit in the rack.
  
  
• When mounting this unit in a partially filled rack, load the rack from the bottom to the top with the heaviest component at the bottom of the rack.
  
  
• If the rack is provided with stabilizing devices, install the stabilizers before mounting or servicing the unit in the rack.

After the brackets are secured to the chassis, you can rack-mount it. Using screws that you provide, attach the chassis to the rack. (See Figure 10).

What to Do After Installing the Router Hardware

After you have installed the router, make all necessary LAN and WAN connections, connect the power cable to the rear panel of the router and the power source, and then power it on. (If the router does not power on, proceed to the "Troubleshooting the Router" appendix in the Cisco 3600 Series Hardware Installation Guide.)

For information on making LAN and WAN connections, refer to the hardware guides on the Documentation CD-ROM that came with your router.

For initial software configuration information, refer to the software configuration guide on the Documentation CD-ROM that came with your router.

Technical Assistance Center

The Cisco TAC is available to all customers who need technical assistance with a Cisco product, technology, or solution. Two types of support are available through the Cisco TAC: the Cisco TAC Web Site and the Cisco TAC Escalation Center.

Inquiries to Cisco TAC are categorized according to the urgency of the issue:

• Priority level 4 (P4)—You need information or assistance concerning Cisco product capabilities, product installation, or basic product configuration.
  
  
• Priority level 3 (P3)—Your network performance is degraded. Network functionality is noticeably impaired, but most business operations continue.
  
  
• Priority level 2 (P2)—Your production network is severely degraded, affecting significant aspects of business operations. No workaround is available.
  
  
• Priority level 1 (P1)—Your production network is down, and a critical impact to business operations will occur if service is not restored quickly. No workaround is available.
