Figure 2-1 Network Control Board front panel 2.1.1 Module FunctionThe NCB module is the central processor unit with all of its peripherals. 2.1.2 Alarm and Supervisory SubunitThe NCB hosts the Subnetwork Manager (SNM) software. The SNM supervises the CLIP modules and manages the communication channels to other management systems.
2.1.3 Front-Panel Indicators, Connections, and AdjustmentsIndicators for the NCB are visible on the front panel of the Communication Interface module (CIM). Table 2-1 shows the NCB-module LEDs on the front panel of the CIM.
A standard Ethernet connector (8-pole modular jack) is provided on the front panel of the NCB. 2.1.4 System RelationshipThe SNM software on the NCB controls the Client Layer Interface Port (CLIP) modules on the internal bus. The status of the NCB board and the entire sub-network can be read on the Communication Interface module (CIM) immediately beneath it. The NCB board can be accessed from the Ethernet port on the front panel and in two different ways through the MA port on the CIM. Accessible using the RS-232 CIM adapter (P/N 72-2746) on the CIM, the EIA/TIA-232 interface requires the parameters in Table 2-2. 2.2 Technical SpecificationsThis section covers optical, electrical, environmental, and mechanical specifications for the NCB module. Default thresholds do not apply. 2.2.1 Optical SpecificationsThe NCB is not an optical device. 2.2.2 Electrical SpecificationsTwo independent external voltages are used: 2.2.3 Environmental SpecificationsTable 2-3 lists the normal climate-related limits. 2.2.4 Mechanical SpecificationsTable 2-4 lists physical dimensions. 2.3 Removal and ReplacementThis section explains how to remove and replace NCB modules. The NCB module is positioned in the Cisco ONS 15252 Multichannel Unit (MCU) as shown in Figure 2-2. Figure 2-2 Mounting an NCB module Procedure: Remove the Network Control BoardStep 1 Back up all NCB files to a laptop or PC as described in the Cisco 15200 Command Line Interface Manual. Step 2 Disconnect the front panel Ethernet cable from the NCB module. Step 3 Loosen the thumbscrews. Step 4 Carefully remove the NCB module from the ONS 15252 MCU. Step 5 If no immediate replacement of the NCB is anticipated, install a 20 mm (0.8")-wide dummy front where the NCB was removed from the ONS 15252 MCU. Procedure: Replace the Network Control BoardStep 1 At the ONS 15252 MCU, remove the NCB dummy front or the defective NCB according to the instructions in the "Replace the Network Control Board" section. Step 2 Align the replacement NCB module with the NCB module slot. Step 3 Carefully insert the module into the slot.
Step 4 Tighten the thumbscrews. Step 5 Connect the front-panel cable, if used. Step 6 Using a CIM RS-232 cable, connect the laptop to the management access (MA) port on the Communication Interface module (CIM). Step 7 Press Enter. The system responds with a logon prompt. Press Enter again. Because no password is needed, press Enter a third time. Step 8 Create a user with administrator privileges: Step 9 At the NCB:> prompt, type create user <user1> and press Enter. The system responds: Created <user1>. The user1:# prompt appears on the screen. a. At the user1:# prompt, type password <password1> and press Enter to create a password for a new user. b. Type privileges administrator and press Enter to assign administrator privileges to the new user. c. Type exit to return to the NCB:> prompt. d. At the NCB:> prompt, type commit user <user1> to finish adding a user with administrator privileges. Step 10 Set the initial IP of the NCB module: a. At the NCB:> prompt, type con sys and press Enter. b. At the NCB:= prompt, type ipconf <ipaddr> <subnet> <gateway> and press Enter. c. At the NCB:= prompt, type ex to return to the NCB:> prompt. Step 11 Disconnect the CIM RS-232 adapter cable. The Subnetwork Manager on the NCB module now has an IP address and can be accessed directly at the Ethernet port on the NCB module front panel with the standard protocols (telnet, ftp, and http). Step 12 Connect a crossover Ethernet cable to the PC and the Ethernet port on the NCB module. Start an ftp session on the host computer by typing the command ftp <ipaddr> at a command prompt (MS-DOS prompt). Step 13 Log in using the administrator name and password you created in Step 8. Step 14 Copy the files from the original NCB to the replacement NCB: a. Type cd <foldername> to navigate to the PC directory where you copied the original NCB files. c. Type put snm.out and press Enter. d. Type ascii and press Enter. e. Type put qdbs.cfg and press Enter. f. Type put <filename> and press Enter to move each remaining file to the replacement NCB. 2.3.1 Software ConfigurationFor information about software configuration, consult the Cisco ONS 15200 Command Line Interface Manual.
