Introduction

This document recommends the use of 128 MB of system memory when you use Integrated Services Module (ISM) or Integrated Services Adapter (ISA) to increase router stability.

Prerequisites

Requirements

There are no specific requirements for this document.

Components Used

The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:

  • Cisco IOS® Software Release 12.0 (5) XE5 or later

  • Cisco 7100 Series Router

  • Cisco 7200 Series Router

Memory Upgrade Requirements

A router needs at least 128 MB of system memory when you use hardware-assisted encryption acceleration cards, such as ISM, in a Cisco 7100 Series Router or ISA in a Cisco 7200 Series Router. This configuration increases the stability of the router when the router establishes more than 100 Virtual Private Network (VPN) tunnels. This table specifies the system memory upgrade requirements for Cisco 7100 and 7200:

In a Multi-ISA configuration, for example, two ISAs in a Cisco 7200 Series Router or ISA and ISM in a Cisco 7140 Series Router, install 256 MB of system memory. This table specifies the system memory upgrade requirements for Cisco 7100 and 7200 with Multi-ISA.
