Cisco® announces the end-of-sale and end-of-life dates for the Cisco ONS 15454 OC-3 and OC-12 Fixed Optics Cards. The last day to order the Cisco ONS 15454 OC-3 and OC-12 Fixed Optics Cards is July 30, 2008. Customers with active service contracts will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) as shown in Table 1 of the EoL bulletin. Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the Cisco ONS 15454 OC-3 and OC-12 Fixed Optics Cards. Table 2 lists the product part numbers affected by this announcement.
New cards, such as the 12-port Multirate Card (MRC-12) and 4-port Multirate Card (MRC-4), offer much higher value propositions than the outgoing cards. The MRC-12 and MRC-4 accommodate Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) optics, providing higher port density and multirate capability per slot than the OC-3 and OC-12 fixed optics cards they are replacing. Both MRC cards support the OC-3, OC-12, and OC-48 rates as well, scalable up to 10 Gbps on the MRC-12 and 2.5 Gbps on the MRC-4, depending on the chassis, slot, and cross-connect combination. The MRC cards also support SFPs of different reaches such as SR, IR, LR, and CWDM. Plus, SFPs can be added to the cards as demand increases, and they are per-port provisionable, thereby minimizing the initial costs and simplifying operations. The MRC cards can be provisioned for operation with SONET protection options such as unidirectional-path switched ring (UPSR), subnetwork connection protection (SNCP), path-protected mesh network (PPMN), two-fiber or four-fiber bidirectional line switched ring or multiplex section-shared protection ring (MS-SPR), 1+1 automatic protection switching (APS) or multiplexed switching protection (MSP), and unprotected.

The MRC cards can operate with the XC-VT, XC-10G, and XC-VXC Cross-Connect Cards. They require the Cisco ONS 15454 Timing, Communications, and Control 2 Card (TCC2) or TCC2-Plus (TCC2P) Card to support the data communications channel (DCC) capacity. MRC-12 requires Cisco ONS 15454 Software Release 6.0 or greater, and the MRC-4 requires Cisco ONS 15454 Software Release 8.0 or greater.
