OVERVIEW

This document contains the End-of-Life plan for ONS 15800 and ONS 15801 10-Gbps B1 No-FEC Transponders. HW and related FW and SW components, as well as Technical Publication manuals of this product release, are included in the End-of-Life plan.

END-OF-LIFE JUSTIFICATION AND RATIONALE

ONS 15800 and ONS 15801 10-Gbps B1 No-FEC Transponders End-of-Life is justified mainly by the availability of 10-Gbps FEC Transponders. These transponders are better in terms of performances, reliability, and operability.

MIGRATION STRATEGY

10-Gbps B1 No-FEC Transponders are managed by all the existing SW releases of ONS 15800/15801 platforms. 10-Gbps B1 FEC Transponders are managed by ONS 15800 Release 1.6 onward and ONS 15801 Release 1.4 onward. It is mandatory to upgrade the network at list at the releases indicated above.
The list of FW and SW packages that have been released with ONS 15800 and ONS 15801-Release 1.6.x, 1.4.x, and 2.0.x-can be found in the "Release Notes" document that is available on CCO Website at the following location: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/optical/ps2016/prod_release_notes_list.html.
It is not possible to swap a 10-Gbps B1 Transponder with a 10-Gbps FEC Transponder even if the SW release manages both the cards. This is due to the different bit-rate at which the two versions of transponders work; 10-Gbps B1 uses as line bit rate 9.952 Gbps while 10-Gbps FEC works at 10.66 Gbps. In case it is required to swap a 10-Gbps B1 card with a 10-Gbps FEC card, it is mandatory to swap all the transponders (both the directions) belonging to that wavelength. In any case, the system supports a simultaneous use of transponder 10-Gbps B1 and 10-Gbps FEC on different wavelengths. System performance is limited by the 10-Gbps B1 channels that are less performing than the 10-Gbps FEC ones.
