Cisco Transport Manager

Cisco Transport Manager 5.0 Product Bulletin

PRODUCT BULLETIN NO. 2721

Cisco Systems® announces the Cisco® Transport Manager Release 5.0, providing new features and support for the latest versions of the Cisco ONS family of network elements along with the Cisco CRS-1 Carrier Routing System.

Cisco Transport Manager is an intelligent element management system (EMS) for the Cisco ONS family of products and Cisco CRS-1. It supports configuration, fault, performance, and security management. Cisco Transport Manager also serves as a foundation for integration into a larger overall operations support system (OSS) environment.
Cisco has improved the operational efficiencies of managing a Cisco optical transport network. The new features available in the Cisco Transport Manager Release 5.0 are shown in Table 1.

Table 1. New Features of the Cisco Transport Manager Release 5.0

Feature

Description

Support for Cisco CRS-1

Cisco Transport Manager 5.0 introduces support for the Cisco CRS-1. A single EMS now can be used to manage both optical transport and core routing.

Support for Cisco ONS 15310 SONET Multiservice Platform

Cisco Transport Manager 5.0 expands support for the Cisco ONS 15000 series products to include management for the Cisco ONS 15310-CL.

Support for Oracle9i

Cisco Transport Manager 5.0 now uses Oracle9i as its database.

Real-time Performance Management Data Display

Cisco Transport Manager 5.0 provides support for real-time performance management collection and display for Cisco Transport Controller (CTC)-based network elements (Cisco ONS 15310, 15327, 15454 SONET, 15454 SDH, 15600 SONET, and 15600 SDH). This enables diagnostics and fault finding to be performed quickly due to rapid data updates.

Separate Pruning Intervals for 15-Minute and 1-Day Performance Management Data

Cisco Transport Manager 5.0 allows independent pruning intervals for 15-minute and 1-day performance management data. By saving the 1-day performance management data but deleting the 15-minute date a longer history can be stored without excessive amounts of 15-minute data filling the database.

Automatic Identification of GateWay Network Elements (GNEs)

CTM automatically identifies if a network element is a GNE, an end network element (ENE), or a LAN-connected network element (LNE). This allows the topology of the network automatically to be discovered and dynamically updated if the network changes. A find function displays all ENEs associated with a GNE.

Improved Debug Logging Control (Ability to Archive Log Files)

When a log file is about to wrap, Cisco Transport Manager saves the regular log file to a separate user selectable, archive file. This provides a mechanism to archive log files and facilitates the long-term collection of logging information.

Ability to Disable Inactive User Accounts Automatically

This feature provides added security for Cisco Transport Manager by automatically disabling accounts after a selected number of non-use days have elapsed.

Control of Simultaneous Active Sessions for the Same User Profile

Allows the number of permitted simultaneous logins assigned to a given user profile to be specified to tightly control access permission to Cisco Transport Manager.

Configurable Password Complexity

The network administrator can configure the password complexity rules including minimum password length, minimum number of special characters, and whether to allow a circular shift.

Early Warning for Password Expiration

This feature allows the network administrator to configure an early warning to inform users of password expiration.

Password History and Prevention of Password Reuse

This feature allows the network administrator to enforce strict control over new passwords and Cisco Transport Manager's password change rules to comply with the corporation's general policy.

End Attempted Login Session After the Threshold is Reached

This feature allows the network to configure the maximum number of login attempts a user is allowed before being denied access.

Dynamic Cisco Transport Manager Menus

Cisco Transport Manager dynamically hides network element-specific menu items that are not required. The submenus under the Configuration and Administration menus are visible only if at least one network element of that type is in the management domain.

Flexible Configuration Resynchronization Scheduling

The network administrator can specify a schedule, including the time and the day of the week, for database resynchronization for each network element model.

Enhancements to Layer 2 Features

This feature introduces the following Layer 2 enhancements:

• Ability to create, modify, and delete quality of service (QoS) profiles; a QoS profile is a set of user-defined QoS parameters that can be saved in the Cisco Transport Manager database and used during Layer 2 service provisioning

• Ability to create, modify, and delete Cisco IOS® command-line interface (CLI) users on ML cards

• Ability to create virtual concatenation (VCAT) circuits for Layer 2 Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) or Layer 2 point-to-point topologies

• Ability to view bandwidth utilization reports for Layer 2 topologies based on the number of Layer 2 services with User-Network Interface (UNI), (QinQ, dot1Q, Untagged) drop ports; a warning is reported if bandwidth is not available during Layer 2 service creation

Enhanced Network Map Link display

Cisco Transport Manager supports display of links between different network element models at compatible layer rates to allow more complete display of network topology.

Least Cost Circuit Routing

Cisco Transport Manager allows for the assignment of a numeric cost associated with the Cisco Transport Controller-based SONET or SDH layer link.

Shared Risk Link Group (SRLG)

It is possible to specify an SRLG for each Cisco Transport Controller-base SONET or SDH layer link. When Diverse SRLG is enabled in the circuit provisioning (only for Fully Protected Path), Cisco Transport Manager chooses a working path and a protected path whose links do not share a common SRLG.

GUI Configuration of Cisco Transport Manager GateWay/Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) Parameters

Quick and easy set up of GateWay/CORBA by access to the configuration parameter from the Cisco Transport Manager GUI.

Support for Up to 25 Cisco Transport Manager GateWay/CORBA Sessions

Cisco Transport Manager supports configuration of the maximum number of simultaneous Cisco Transport Manager GateWay/CORBA OSS sessions. The default is four sessions; the range is 1 to 25 sessions.
