Cisco IOS Software Releases 12.2 Special and Early Deployments

New Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(44)SE for Cisco Catalyst 3750 Metro, Cisco ME 2400 and ME 3400 Series Ethernet Access Switches

PB450723

Cisco® announces Cisco IOS® Software updates for Cisco Catalyst® 3750 Metro, ME 3400, and ME 2400 Series Switches. This release furthers Cisco leadership by providing pseudowire redundancy, enhanced control plane security, multicast, and manageability for Metro Ethernet deployments.

This product bulletin contains content and delivery information for Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(44)SE.
The following new features are available with Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(44)SE for Metro Ethernet switches:

• Pseudowire redundancy: Enables service providers to configure their Multiprotocol Label Switching) MPLS network to detect a failure in the network and reroute Layer 2 service to another endpoint that can continue to provide service.

• Configurable control plane security: Provides service providers the flexibility to selectively discard or peer with customer's control plane traffic on a per-port, per-protocol basis. This release introduces a new port type known as Enhanced Network Interface (ENI) to enable this functionality for the following L2 protocols: CDP, LLDP, LACP, PAgP, and STP.

• Configurable control plane queue assignment: Allows service providers to assign control plane traffic to specific egress queue.

• Prioritization of control plane traffic: Allows service providers to set QoS markings globally for CPU-generated traffic so these protocol packets will receive priority in the network.

• Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) based auto configuration and image update: Simplify management of large number of switches by automatically downloading specified configuration and image.

• Source-specific multicast (SSM) mapping: The SSM capability is an efficient and optimized multicast protocol that is used for one-to-many multicast applications such as video. SSM mapping provides a mapping of source to group, which allows listeners to find/connect to multicast sources dynamically, reducing dependencies on the application.

• FlexLinks multicast fast convergence: Increases network availability by improving convergence of multicast streams during FlexLinks failover.

• Digital optical monitoring (DOM) support: Provides a service provider with the capability to perform in-service transceiver monitoring and troubleshooting operations.

• 802.1x readiness check: Simplifies deployment by generating a report for end hosts capable of 802.1x. Readiness check can be initiated for all the ports (global) or specific ports to determine readiness of connected end hosts, before configuring 802.1x on the switch.

Table 1 describes product support for new features of Cisco IOS Software Release 12.2(44)SE for Metro Ethernet switches, and Table 2 lists the supported switches.

Because of export restrictions on strong cryptography software, a separate image is required for the cryptographic features (Secure Shell [SSH] Protocol, Simple Network Management Protocol [SNMP] v3, and Kerberos Protocol). These software images can be downloaded from the corresponding Triple Data Encryption Standard (3DES) area of the links provided in this section. Note that the Cisco Advanced IP Services license is available only in cryptographic format.
