The Cisco® GSS 4492R Global Site Selector is part of the Cisco ACE Application Control Engine product family and is a crucial component of any data center or cloud computing architecture that requires an appliance-based, security-focused, universal global load balancer. The Cisco GSS 4492R allows businesses to deploy global Internet and intranet applications with the confidence that all application users will be quickly routed to a standby data center if a primary data center outage or overload occurs. Further, they can be assured that global traffic management and load balancing of these same applications will be maintained according to their business rules. The Cisco GSS 4492R in combination with the Cisco ACE Application Control Engine Module and Cisco ACE 4710 Application Control Engine Appliance provides an application-fluent networking solution that increases availability, acceleration, and security for data center applications. The Cisco GSS 4492R allows enterprises and service providers to meet four primary IT objectives for application delivery:
• Increase application availability
• Accelerate application performance
• Secure the data center and critical business applications
• Facilitate data center consolidation through the use of fewer servers, load balancers, and data center firewalls
This document includes instructions for ordering, downloading, and installing Cisco GSS licenses and software. It also provides detailed information about individual Cisco GSS SKUs, product authorization key (PAK) certificates, service support, and licensing alarms.
Cisco GSS Configuration Options
The Cisco GSS configuration options consist of the hardware configuration, the required standard software, and one optional license.
Cisco GSS Hardware Configuration Options
The Cisco GSS 4492R is a one-rack-unit-high network appliance. The appliance includes a CPU, memory, hard disk storage, a pair of traffic-handling 10/100/1000 autosensing Ethernet ports, one console port for out-of-band management, and an integrated AC power supply. Other than the AC power cord, which you can select from among options, there are no configurable hardware components.
Standard Software: Required
The base Cisco GSS Software Release 3.0 supports standard Cisco GSS global server load-balancing (GSLB) capabilities. The standard software that is shipped preinstalled on the Cisco GSS 4492R supports the following features:
• Domain Name Service (DNS) address record (A-record)
An optional license enabling the integrated DNS-focused distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) protection is offered for the Cisco GSS 4492R. This license must be ordered separately for each Cisco GSS appliance on which the DDoS protection software license is to be activated, though it is shipped as part of the preinstalled standard software. When ordered, this feature is enabled through the software license activation process.
Primarily recommended for Internet-facing Cisco GSS appliances, the optional DDoS protection uses a subset of the unique Cisco Multiverification Process (MVP) architecture found on Cisco Guard DDoS Mitigation Appliances. With the optional DNS-focused DDoS protection enabled, Cisco GSS handles DNS-related attacks and delivers the following DDoS mitigation capabilities:
• Filters
• Rate limitation per DNS server proxy, with learning during normal operation
• To receive an evaluation license for the DDoS protection software, email your request to ask-gss@cisco.com.

Activating Cisco GSS Licenses Using the PAK Certificate
Customers will receive a printed license PAK for each Cisco GSS 4492R appliance or optional feature license ordered. All customers must go to the licensing website listed on the PAK certificate to complete their Cisco GSS registration. The PAK certificate provides clear instructions about how to complete the Cisco GSS licensing process. After the customer completes PAK registration, the Cisco GSS license files are emailed to the customer. Customers will receive an email message from licensing@cisco.com usually within an hour after they have completed their PAK registration.
Note: If you do not receive an email message from licensing@cisco.com within an hour after you have completed your PAK registration, please check your junk email folder. Some email servers may filter out this email message and place it in your junk email folder. If you cannot find or did not receive your license file within 24 hours, please contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) at (800) 553-2447 or tac@cisco.com.
Failure to properly register the Cisco GSS licenses will lead to deregistration of Cisco GSS from the Cisco GSS cluster under which it is to be managed, effectively preventing it from being managed and making it unable to process traffic.
