Alternative Backhaul - HSDPA

Introduction

Increase Revenue and Customer Loyalty

GSM mobile service operators are deploying High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) to support the greater bandwidth requirements of media-rich applications, including gaming, video, and IPTV. While these new applications can increase revenues and customer loyalty, they can also increase RAN backhaul bandwidth exponentially, a provisioning and “budget-busting” nightmare.

Cisco RAN Optimization over Pseudo-wire (OPW) is capable of routing HSDPA traffic via alternative backhaul media such as Carrier Ethernet (MetroE) and xDSL. Cisco OPW with HSDPA off-load makes possible rapid provisioning of third-generation (3G) media-rich applications and reduces operating expenses. Cisco OPW is available on the MWR-1941-DC and the ONS-15454 with the OPW-capable IP card.

The same OPW solution that supports HSDPA off-load also supports optimization of second- and third-generation backhaul traffic.

OPW solution advantages include:

  • HSDPA off-load to alternative bandwidth
  • 50 percent efficiency gain for 2G traffic
  • 15 to 90 percent efficiency gain for 3G traffic
  • Extension of Cisco IOS software features to the cell site
  • IP-PoP capability at the cell site (for IP-based services like P-VPN)
  • Remote telemetry for efficient operation
  • 3GPP R5/R6 compliance

The OPW solution with GSM/UMTS optimization and HSDPA off-load is just one part of the Cisco next-generation RAN portfolio.
