Naming Rules for Users and Roles

Table B-1 lists the rules for WLSE usernames, passwords, and roles. These rules apply to WLSE users configured in the Administration > User Admin subtab and to users configured by using the CLI username command.

Table B-1 Allowable Characters for Users and Roles

User Name

No more than 32 characters.

Case-sensitive.

The following characters are not permitted:

Cannot start with a number, unless the user is not using the CLI. If the user is not using the CLI (that is, the user's CLI access privilege is set to None), the username can begin with a number.

Cannot contain a colon, semi-colon, comma, single-quote, double-quote, or space.

Other than the restrictions noted above, any character from Table B-2 is permitted.

User Password

No limit on length.

Case sensitive.

Any character except for the single quote or double quote.

User Role

No more than 32 characters.

Case-sensitive.

Cannot contain a hyphen (dash, minus sign) or a full stop (period).

Other than the restrictions noted above, any character from Table B-2 is permitted.


Naming Rules for Hostnames and Device Names

The naming rules for hostnames and device names are:

Blank spaces are not allowed.

The first character in a name must be alphanumeric.

The only valid characters are the alphanumeric characters, the minus sign (-), the period (.), and the underscore (_).

Naming Rules for Other Names and Descriptions

Table B-2 lists the allowable characters for names and descriptions in most WLSE dialogs. There are restrictions on the following types of names:

Users and roles—See Naming Rules for Users and Roles.

Device names and hostnames—See Naming Rules for Hostnames and Device Names.

The number of characters allowed are:

Names

For templates, up to 56 characters are allowed.

For faults settings, up to 60 characters are allowed.

For all other names, up to 64 characters are allowed.

Descriptions—up to 256 characters are allowed


Note Each job name (configuration job, firmware job, or AP radio scan) must be unique.


There are additional rules for some WLSE screens. These rules are included in the online help for those screens.


Note Do not use the Enter key in any description fields.

Naming Rules for Domain Names

You cannot use a semicolon (;) in a domain name.

Naming Rules for the Built-In AAA Server (WLSE Express Only)

The built-in AAA server on the WLSE Express allows up to 255 characters and any character except for the forward slash (/) in client names, group names, and usernames.

Naming Rules for Authentication Modules

You cannot use a pound (#) sign in the shared secret for RADIUS or TACACS+ authentication modules, which are defined under Admin > Appliance > Security > Authentication Modules.
