Diameter Accounting Management Changes as of June 29, 2012

This section provides information on Diameter accounting management changes available in release 14.0.

Diameter Feature Changes

This section identifies Diameter feature changes available in release 14.0.

New Diameter Features

This section identifies new Diameter features available in release 14.0.

Diameter Host Select Template Configuration

Applicable Product(s): GGSN, HA, HSGW, IPSG, PDSN, P-GW, S-GW

This feature allows the user to configure Diameter host template at global configuration level. Diameter host template is a table of peer servers that can be shared by different Diameter services. This template can be configured using diameter-host-template command in the Global Configuration Mode.

IMPORTANT:

Currently, only Gx service can be associated with the template.

When this command is configured, it allows the user to specify the name of a new or existing Diameter host template and then enters the Diameter Host Select mode. You can configure up to 256 templates on the system.

To use the template, Diameter applications must be associated with the template. For example, using diameter host-select-template command in Policy Control Configuration Mode will bind the IMS authorization service to the configured Diameter host select template. When an association is made to the template, the system selects the Diameter peer to be contacted based on rows configured in the table and the algorithm configured for selecting rows in the table. The system uses the returned host name(s) to contact the primary PCRF (and secondary if configured) and establish the call.

Dynamic Diameter Dictionary Configuration

Applicable Product(s): GGSN, HA, HSGW, IPSG, PDSN, P-GW, S-GW

Apart from the standard and customer-specific dictionaries supported currently in the Diameter application, this feature allows the dynamic configuration of any new Diameter dictionaries at run time. This feature can be configured using diameter dynamic-dictionary command in the Global Configuration Mode. For more information on this command, refer to the Command Line Interface Reference.

IMPORTANT:

You can configure and load up to a maximum of 10 dynamic dictionaries in to the system.

To perform this configuration, you should first create a text file in ABNF format and configure all the required Diameter AVPs and command codes in the file. Then, save the file in flash or some URL that will be accessible by the system.

Now, configure a dynamic dictionary with an unique name and map it to the URL of the file to be loaded dynamically in to the system at the global configuration level.

When the names of the dynamic dictionaries and their URLs are configured, the corresponding files at the respective URLs are parsed and populated in all SessMgr and AAAmgr facilities as new dictionaries and kept available to be used when these dictionary names are configured under any Diameter application level or AAA group.

When a dynamic dictionary name is configured under an application such as IMS authorization service or in a AAA group, the corresponding dictionary (which is already loaded in SessMgrs and AAAMgrs) entry will be used.

Failure Handling Template Configuration

Applicable Product(s): GGSN, HA, HSGW, IPSG, PDSN, P-GW, S-GW

This feature allows the user to configure Failure Handling template at Global Configuration level. The failure handling template defines the action to be taken when the Diameter application encounters a failure for example, a result-code failure, tx-expiry or response-timeout. The application will take the action given by the template. This template can be configured using failure-handling-template command in the Global Configuration Mode.

IMPORTANT:

A maximum of 64 templates can be configured on the system.

If there are different failure handling configurations present within the template for the same message type, the action is applied as per the latest error encountered.

To use the template, Diameter applications must be associated with the template. For example, using associate failure-handling-template command in Credit Control Configuration Mode will bind the Diameter Credit Control Application (DCCA) service to the configured failure handling template. When an association is made to the template, in the event of a failure, the system takes the action as defined in the failure handling template. Both IMS Authorization (Gx) and DCCA (Gy) services can be currently associated with the template.

Support of Diameter AVP sent by PCRF to GGSN/P-GW

Applicable Product(s): GGSN, P-GW

Support of Diameter AVP sent by PCRF to GGSN/P-GW via Gx passed to (e)G-CDR and PGW-CDR. The AVP added is:

3GPP-Charging-Characteristics

This can be sent in CCA- INITIAL / UPDATE / TERMINATE and RAR.

Modified Diameter Features

This section identifies Diameter features modified in release 14.0. There are two kinds of modified features: enhancements and behavior changes. Enhancements are feature changes based on customer change requests. Behavior changes are feature changes that modify an existing behavior and may result from software error corrections (bug fixes).

APN-specific APN-OI-Replacement - Behavior Change

Applicable Product(s): MME

Previous Behavior: MME ignored the APN-OI-Replacement AVP value in the APN data provided by the HSS.

New Behavior: The MME now uses the APN-OI-Replacement AVP value provided by the HSS to construct the FQDN for DNS resolution.

CCR-U with Volume Report – Behavior Change

Applicable Product(s): GGSN, HA, IPSG, PDSN, P-GW

Previous Behavior: When volume usage report was sent while usage monitoring was still active, the system continued with existing thresholds configured.

New Behavior: When volume report is sent while usage monitoring is still active, the volume threshold is set to infinite until response is received from PCRF.

Diameter Cause Code Enhancement - Behavior Change

Applicable Product(s): GGSN

Previous Behavior: The Diameter disconnect cause “DO_NOT_WANT_TO_TALK_TO_YOU “in the disconnect peer request was treated as an admin disable. When the system gets into this state the connection was not retried and the connection was enabled by the administrator using the diameter enable endpoint command in the Exec mode.

New Behavior: If a reconnect timer value is configured through the reconnect-timeout command in the Diameter Endpoint Configuration mode, then remote disconnected peers with disconnect cause “DO_NOT_WANT_TO_TALK_TO_YOU” will be automatically reconnected when the timer expires.

Diameter SCTP Enhancements - Behavior Change

Applicable Product(s): MME

Previous Behavior: When an SCTP association is established and secondary IP addresses are dynamically added or removed, the SCTP connection was terminated.

New Behavior: Whenever a secondary IP address is dynamically added or removed from an SCTP association, the affected host notifies its peer of the change in configuration using the Address Configuration Change Chunk (ASCONF) chunk without terminating the SCTP connection.

IMEI and IMSI TBCD Format in Gy interface - Behavior Change

Applicable Product(s): GGSN

Previous Behavior: Diameter Gy interface was sending the IMEI and IMSI in STRING format instead of “Standard Format” called TBCD (Telephony Binary Coded Decimal String).

New Behavior: Per the standard spec 3GPP TS 23.003, IMEI and IMSI will now be sent in TBCD format through the Gy interface.

IPv6 Support for WLAN-CDRs from PDG/TTG - Behavior Change

Applicable Product(s): PDG, TTG

Previous Behavior: The WLAN-CDRs generated by PDG/TTG supported only IPv4 version encoding for the WLAN-CDR fields “PDG Address” and “Served WLAN PDP Address”.

New Behavior: PDG/TTG now supports IPv6 for both service and subscriber IP addresses. So, the WLAN-CDR generated for IPv6 based calls (pdg-service or subscriber) generates WLAN-CDRs with IPv6 format for subscriber/PDG service in it.

Removed 3GPP Rel. 6 Gx Interface Support

Applicable Product(s): GGSN, HA, HSGW, IPSG, PDSN, P-GW, S-GW

Omitted Content: This change occurred in the June 29, 2012 code drop but was omitted from this document until now.

Note that, in this release, the 3GPP Rel. 6 interface functionality is not supported.

Sending CCR-T on Call Termination in Failure Handling Continue - Behavior Change

Applicable Product(s): GGSN, HA, HSGW, IPSG, PDSN, P-GW, S-GW

Previous Behavior: IMS authorization session was deleted after applying the failure action. Hence, there were no active sessions for IMS authorization after applying the failure action.

New Behavior: IMS authorization session is now preserved to send the CCR-T request message to PCRF on call termination. After applying the failure action continue, IMS authorization session appears to be active in the show CLI command output.

Session Termination with Single CCR-T - Behavior Change

Applicable Product(s): GGSN, HA, HSGW, IPSG, PDSN, P-GW, S-GW

Previous Behavior: In the earlier design, CCR-U and CCR-T were sent for the termination of sub-session and last sub-session respectively. The BEARER_ID of the terminated last sub-session was included in the CCR-T request message.

New Behavior: In the new design, a single CCR-T is sent for the termination of the entire session and no CCR-U is sent for termination of individual sub-sessions. The Bearer-Identifier and Bearer-Operation AVPs will no longer be sent in the CCR-T.

SM-IMSA-ECSv2 Redesign - Behavior Changes

Applicable Product(s): P-GW, ACS

Previous Behavior 1: When call is cleared, CCR-U was sent for each bearer with bearer-operation as TERMINATION and CCR-T sent for last bearer (with Bearer-Identifier/Bearer-Operation AVPs).

New Behavior 1: While clearing the call, CCR-Us will not be sent to PCRF for secondary bearers. Only single CCR-T will be sent without bearer-id.

Previous Behavior 2: IMSA used to detect immediate failure before sending RAA, like unknown_bearer_id, rule-failures.

New Behavior 2: RAA will always be sent with success. Another CCR-U will be generated to report failures and rule(s) status.

Previous Behavior 3: A few statistics were printed at IMSA session (bearer level).

New Behavior 3: Statistics are now printed at control session level (subscriber level).

Support for ESP Protocol in Flow Description - Behavior Change

Applicable Product(s): P-GW, ACS

Previous Behavior: When flow descriptions of protocol 50 (ESP - Encap Security Payload) were installed in dynamic rules, PCEF used to reject rule installation.

New Behavior: Rules with flow description of protocol 50 is supported in PCEF and such rules are successfully installed.
