Cisco Aironet 1500 Series Access Point Pole Mount Kit Mounting Instructions
This document provides instructions for mounting the Cisco Aironet 1500 Series LWAPP-Enabled Outdoor Mesh Access Point on a pole using the provided pole mount kit.
The following information is provided in this document.
Safety Precautions
Warning
The outdoor access point is a sealed unit and if opened in the field may become a hazard. If the seal is broken on an outdoor access point, return it to Cisco for a replacement.
Warning
When it is powered by 100- to 240-VAC 50/60 Hz, connect this equipment only to a twist-lock outdoor lighting control. Do not connect it to a twist-lock outdoor lighting control powered by higher voltages.
Warning
This equipment must be externally grounded using a customer-supplied ground wire before power is applied to prevent the possiblitly of electrical shock. Contact the appropriate electrical inspection authority or an electrician if you are uncertain that suitable grounding is available.
Warning
When connecting the street light adapter to Category 3 pole-top power, make sure the Category 3 power source is turned off. Not turning off the power could result in injury or death.
Note
When powering the access point with an AC power source other than the street lamp option power source, the power plug should be installed where it can be conveniently accessed so that power can be removed from the access point. Where it is not subjected to water or the outdoor elements, you should use a UL listed power receptacle, such as a GFCI. The receptacle you choose should have a UL listed waterproof cover.
Overview
The pole mount kit is used to mount the 1500 series access point to on a light pole as shown in Figure 1.

The kit consists of three components and appropriate mounting hardware: the access point mounting plate, the adjustment plate, and the pole clamp subassembly. When correctly installed, these components provide an adjustment range that allows you to keep the access point level even though the pole is not. For exaample, it could be installed on a curved section of a street light pole. The kit works best on galvanized steel or aluminum light poles. The pole mount kit brackets are designed to cut through any oxidation on the outside of the pole, ensuring an electrical grounding connection to the pole.
Tools and Equipment Required
To install the access point you will need the following tools and equipment:

Appropriate wrench (open, box, or adjustable)

Torque wrench
•
Pocket level
Mounting Instructions
When used with the Cisco Aironet external omnidirectional antennas, the 1500 series access point provides the greatest coverage area and data transfer rate when the access point is mounted horizontally and the antennas are mounted vertically on a pole (see Figure 1). The access point can also be mounted vertically and the external antennas can be mounted independent of the access point. In either case, the Cisco Aironet external antennas must be mounted facing down to prevent water intrusion.
Note
If you install the access point vertically, you must install the AC power, Ethernet, and DC power connectors facing down to prevent water intrusion.
The access point ships with the mounting plate attached to the access point as shown in Figure 2.

Follow these steps to mount your 1500 series access point on a pole.
Step 1
Use two supplied boly and lock washer sets to loosely attach the adjustment plate to the access point mounting plate. This creates the adjustment and mounting plate subassembly as shown in Figure 3.

Step 2
Select a mounting location. You can attach the access point to any light pole upright or arm having a diameter between 1.66 in. (50.59 cm) and 3.55 in. (108.24 cm).
Step 3
Loosely assemble the pole mount kit components around the pole as shown in Figure 4. This creates the pole clamp subassembly.

Step 4
Make sure that the pole clamp subassembly is properly positioned on the pole, and then use a torque wrench to tighten the pole mounting bolts to 15-20 ft. lb.
CautionDo not overtighten! If you overtighten the pole clamp bolts, you will bend the pole clamps.
Note
The pole clamp subassembly ships with mounting bolts. If you need longer or shorter bolts, purchase 3/16-16 bolts in the length required for your installation. The bolts can protrude 1 to 3 in. (2.5 to 7.6 cm) and still allow the final pole mount assembly to swivel and rotate.
Step 5
Use the last two screw and lock washer sets to loosely attach the access point to the access point mounting holes on the pole clamp subassembly as shown in Figure 5.

Step 6
If necessary, rotate the access point until it is level. Use a pocket level to verify that the top edge of the access point is horizontal, and then use a torque wrench to tighten the access point mounting bolts to 15-20 ft. lb.
CautionDo not overtighten! If you overtighten the access point mounting bolts, you can twist the captive T-nuts loose.
Step 7
