Installing the Latest Service Packs and Updates

Introduction

The Microsoft service packs that were required and the updates that were recommended when the shipping version of Cisco Unity was released are available on the CDs that shipped with Cisco Unity. However, after Cisco Unity installation is complete, we recommend that you install the latest service packs that are qualified for use with Cisco Unity and the latest updates that are available in the Cisco Unity Server Updates wizard.

On the day that support for a new service pack is announced, the "Recommended Service Packs—Cisco Unity Server" section of the System Requirements for Cisco Unity will be updated. If the section does not exist, no service packs have been qualified for use with Cisco Unity since the most recent Cisco Unity release. Refer to the applicable version of System Requirements for Cisco Unity at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/prod_installation_guides_list.html.

All of the Microsoft updates currently recommended for use with Cisco Unity are available in the Cisco Unity Server Updates wizard, which can be downloaded from the Microsoft and Updates for Cisco Unity downloads page at http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/unity_msft_updates. (The Server Updates wizard also lets you optionally install Cisco Security Agent for Cisco Unity.)

Within one week of the release of new Microsoft updates, we will post a new Server Updates wizard. For a list of the Microsoft updates and the version of the Cisco Security Agent for Cisco Unity installed by a given version of the wizard, refer to Software Installed by the Cisco Unity Server Updates Wizard at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/prod_installation_guides_list.html.

The Cisco Unity Server Updates wizard installs only the English-language version of Microsoft updates. You can use the wizard to install updates on the Cisco Unity server when:

Windows Server 2003 was installed using the Cisco Unity Platform Configuration discs (PCDs) that are included with Cisco Unity servers. These PCDs use the Microsoft Multilingual User Interface to localize the Windows user interface into the languages supported for use with Cisco Unity.

Windows 2000 Server was installed using the PCDs. (All Windows 2000 Server PCDs install the English-language version of Windows.)

Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 Server was installed using a retail, English-language Windows disc.

You cannot use these service packs or the Cisco Unity Server Updates wizard to update the Cisco Unity server when Windows was installed using a retail, non-English-language Windows disc. If you installed a non-English-language version of Windows, we recommend that you download localized service packs and updates from the Microsoft website and install them using the documentation that is available on the download pages.

For support information, refer to Supported Hardware and Software, and Support Policies for Cisco Unity.

Downloading the Latest Service Packs and Updates

To Download Microsoft Service Packs and the Server Updates Wizard

Step 1 Confirm that the computer you are using has sufficient hard disk space for the recommended updates. For the downloaded files and for the extracted updates, you will need approximately two times the total of the download file sizes. (The download file sizes appear on the Microsoft Service Packs and Updates for Cisco Unity page.)

Step 2 On a computer with a high-speed Internet connection, go to the Microsoft Updates for Cisco Unity Software Download page at http://www.cisco.com/pcgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/unity_msft_updates.

Note To access the software download page, you must be logged on to Cisco.com as a registered user.

Step 3 Click CUServerUpdatesWizard-<version>-<release date>-K9.exe, which contains the latest Cisco Unity Server Updates wizard.

Step 4 Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the download. When you download the software, make note of the MD5 value for each downloaded file.

Step 5 If any Microsoft service packs were qualified for use with Cisco Unity after the most recent version of Cisco Unity was released, the service packs and installation instructions will also be available on this page. Repeat Step 3 and Step 4 for each service pack that you need, if any, and for the corresponding installation instructions.

Step 6 When all downloads are complete, use a checksum generator to confirm that the MD5 checksum of the downloaded file matches the checksum that is listed on Cisco.com. If the values do not match, the downloaded file is damaged.

Caution Do not attempt to use a damaged file to install software or the results will be unpredictable. If the MD5 values do not match, download the file again until the value for the downloaded file matches the value listed on Cisco.com.

Free checksum tools are available on the Internet, for example, the Microsoft File Checksum Integrity Verifier utility. This utility is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 841290, Availability and Description of the File Checksum Integrity Verifier Utility. The KB article also includes a link for downloading the utility.

Step 7 Extract the contents of the self-extracting executable files to separate directories:

a. In Windows Explorer, double-click the file.

b. In WinZip, specify a directory to which the contents will be extracted.

Step 8 Burn a CD for each file that you downloaded and extracted. Label the CDs with the contents and today's date, noting the following considerations:

Use the Joliet file system, which accommodates filenames up to 64 characters long.

If the disc-burning application that you are using includes an option to verify the contents of the burned disc, choose that option. This causes the application to compare the contents of the burned disc with the source files.

Step 9 When you are done burning CDs, delete the downloaded .exe files to free disk space.

Installing the Latest Service Packs and Updates

Some Microsoft updates can be installed only after a prerequisite service pack has been installed. Install all of the latest recommended service packs, if any, before you install updates.

To Install the Latest Microsoft Service Packs Recommended for Use with Cisco Unity

Follow the instructions that you downloaded in Step 5 of the "To Download Microsoft Service Packs and the Server Updates Wizard" procedure.

To Install Microsoft Updates and Cisco Security Agent for Cisco Unity

Step 1 Insert the disc that contains the Cisco Unity Server Updates wizard in the DVD drive on the Cisco Unity server.

Step 2 Browse to the drive and double-click ServerUpdatesWizard.exe.

Step 3 Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation of Microsoft updates and, optionally, of Cisco Security Agent for Cisco Unity.

Note If you are accessing the server by using Remote Desktop or a VNC client, and you are installing Cisco Security Agent for Cisco Unity, the Remote Desktop or VNC session will be disconnected when Cisco Unity restarts the network interface. If the session does not reconnect automatically, reconnect manually to finish the Server Updates wizard.
