Design Differences Between Cisco Unity 7.0 and Cisco Unity 5.0

Design Differences Between Cisco Unity 7.0/5.0 and Cisco Unity 4.2

Overview

The Cisco Unity Design Guide applies to all versions of Cisco Unity except as noted in this appendix or as indicated in the following documents:

Cisco Unity <version> System Requirements at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/prod_installation_guides_list.html.

Supported Hardware and Software, and Support Policies for Cisco Unity <version> and Later at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/prod_installation_guides_list.html.

Cisco Unity Supported Platforms List at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/products_data_sheets_list.html.

Design Differences Between Cisco Unity 7.0 and Cisco Unity 5.0

There are no design differences between Cisco Unity 7.0 and Cisco Unity 5.0.

Design Differences Between Cisco Unity 7.0/5.0 and Cisco Unity 4.2

Nearly all of this Cisco Unity Design Guide is applicable to all supported versions of Cisco Unity. The following table lists—by chapter—any exceptions that you must take into consideration when designing a Cisco Unity version 4.2 system.

Table A-1 Design Differences Between Cisco Unity 7.0/5.0 and Cisco Unity 4.2

Design Guide Chapter
Differences When Designing a Cisco Unity 4.2 System

Chapter 2, "Cisco Unity Concepts"

SMTP Networking is a supported networking protocol between Cisco Unity 4.2 servers in different Active Directory forests; SMTP Networking was replaced with VPIM in Cisco Unity 5.0. See Cisco Unity Networking Options Requirements at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/products_feature_guides_list.html.

Chapter 3, "Network Infrastructure Requirements"

Interoperability Among Multiple Voice-Messaging Systems

Multiple Cisco Unity 4.2 systems can communicate with one another using Digital Networking (within an Active Directory forest) or SMTP (between forests). The SMTP protocol is not dependent on audio format and the Cisco Unity servers can use any of the supported codecs.

Chapter 4, "Designing a Cisco Unity System with Exchange as the Message Store"

Communication Between Cisco Unity Servers and with Cisco Unity Connection

In Cisco Unity 4.2, Cisco Unity servers in separate Active Directory forests communicate using SMTP networking. Using VPIM networking in this configuration is not supported.

Cisco Unity 4.2 cannot communicate with Cisco Unity Connection.

Exchange 2007

Exchange 2007 is not supported with Cisco Unity 4.2.

Chapter 5, "Designing a Cisco Unity System with Domino as the Message Store"

Cisco Unity 4.2 for Exchange and for Domino have comparable feature sets. Except for features that were introduced in Cisco Unity 5.0 (for example, voice recognition), you can use this chapter for design guidance for a Cisco Unity 4.2 system.

Chapter 6, "Integrating Cisco Unity with the Phone System"

Integrating with multiple phone systems is not supported as documented in this guide. Instead, see the Multiple Phone System Integration Guide for Cisco Unity 4.2 at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/products_installation_and_configuration_guides_list.html.

Chapter 7, "Cisco Unity Failover and Standby Redundancy"

For information on failover for Cisco Unity 4.2, see the following documentation at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps2237/products_feature_guides_list.html:

Cisco Unity Documentation Addendum, Release 4.2

The applicable Cisco Unity Failover Configuration and Administration Guide, Release 4.0(5) and Later

The following Cisco Unity 5.0 features are not supported in Cisco Unity 4.2:

Installing Exchange 2003 on the Cisco Unity secondary server in a Voice Messaging configuration with failover

Deploying Cisco Unity failover between two data centers over a WAN

Standby redundancy

Chapter 8, "Voice-Recognition Access to Cisco Unity"

Voice recognition is not supported with Cisco Unity 4.2.

Chapter 9, "Migrating to Cisco Unity from Another Voice-Messaging System"

None. All of the information in this chapter is applicable to Cisco Unity version 4.2.
