Release Notes for Cisco Mobile for iPhone, Release 8.x
Published: April 21, 2010Revised: May 26, 2011
Note
For information about Cisco Mobile 7.1, also known as Cisco Unified Mobile Communicator 7.1, which is a different product and runs in conjunction with a Cisco Unified Mobility Advantage server, see http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps7270/prod_release_notes_list.html.
This document contains release information for Cisco Mobile for iPhone releases 8.1.2, 8.1.1, 8.1, 8.0.3, 8.0.2, and 8.0.1.
To obtain the latest Cisco Mobile client software, visit the App Store using iTunes or the App Store application on the iPhone.
Contents
Introduction
Cisco Mobile provides iPhone users with voice over IP (VoIP) calling, visual voicemail, and access to the corporate directory while users are connected to the corporate network over Wi-Fi, either on company premises or over VPN.
Cisco Mobile client software works in conjunction with Cisco Unified Communications Manager and Cisco Unity Connection to extend Cisco enterprise communications applications and services to iPhones.
System Requirements
Network Requirements
The iPhone must be able to connect to the corporate network using voice-ready Wi-Fi.
For optimal user experience when roaming within the corporate wireless network, access points must:
•
All assign the same IP address to the iPhone (calls will be dropped if the IP address changes)
•
Have the same SSID (hand-off may be much slower if the SSIDs don't match)
•
Broadcast their SSID (otherwise the iPhone may bring up a prompt to join another Wi-Fi network, interrupting the call)
•
Eliminate gaps in coverage as much as possible, including in areas such as elevators, stairways, and outside corridors.
Conduct a thorough site survey to minimize network problems that could affect voice quality. The survey should include verifying non-overlapping channel configurations, access point coverage, and required data and traffic rates; eliminating rogue access points; and identifying and mitigating the impact of potential interference sources.
For more information, see:

Bluetooth use can worsen connectivity issues. See Bluetooth and Network Interference.
If users will connect to the network while off corporate premises, the iPhone must be able to connect to the corporate network using a solid, high-bandwidth VPN connection.
Voice quality is dependent on connection quality and cannot be guaranteed.
Cisco Unified Communications Manager Requirements
One of the following Cisco Unified Communications Manager releases is required:

Cisco Unity Connection Release 7.x, 8.0, or 8.5
Required Codecs for Calls
•
G.711
•

Global cataloging must be enabled.
To use Active Directory for identification of callers and voice messages, phone numbers in Active Directory must be unformatted.
Requirements for VPN On Demand
In order for Cisco Mobile to launch VPN automatically when needed, the iPhone must be set up for certificate-based IPSec authentication for VPN on-demand access. The iPhone must be able to access the corporate network, servers, and telephony endpoints using VPN.

Upgrading Existing Clients to Cisco Mobile 8.1
Follow these instructions to upgrade users from Cisco Mobile Release 8.0 to Release 8.1.
1.
In order to support multitasking, make the following changes in Cisco Unified Communications Manager:
•
Create a dedicated SIP Profile with required settings.
For details, see the Administration Guide for Cisco Mobile 8.x for iPhone at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps7271/prod_installation_guides_list.html.
•
Assign this dedicated SIP Profile on the Cisco Dual Mode for iPhone device page for each user of Cisco Mobile.
The changed profile does not affect Cisco Mobile 8.0, so you can make this change for all Cisco Dual Mode for iPhone devices.
2.
After you have set up Cisco Unified Communications Manager to support multitasking, send users the information required for them to install and reprovision Cisco Mobile:
•
The provisioning information for each user, as described in the "Giving Information to Users" section in the Administration Guide for Cisco Mobile for iPhone, as applicable to your deployment.
•
Instructions to:
–
Remove Cisco Mobile 8.0 from their phones.
–
Download and install Cisco Mobile 8.1 from the App Store.
–
Restart the phone.
–
Perform any other required steps for a new installation in your environment, as described in the "Giving Information to Users" section in the Administration Guide for Cisco Mobile for iPhone.
Bluetooth and Network Interference
Bluetooth headsets use the same 2.4 GHz frequency as 802.11b, -g, and -n Wi-Fi networks and many other devices including microwave ovens and cordless phones. For this reason, interference is likely to impact Bluetooth transmissions, and Bluetooth headsets may interfere with the Wi-Fi connection to the iPhone. This issue is not specific to Cisco Mobile but can result in dropped or interrupted calls and voice quality issues.
To minimize interference from Bluetooth headsets on the Wi-Fi network, ensure that a strong Wi-Fi signal is available throughout the coverage area, as described in the Network Requirements section in the System Requirements.
Also see the following Apple articles: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365 and http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21415.
Cisco TAC cannot troubleshoot these issues.
