Introduction

Cisco Mobile provides iPhone users with voice over IP (VoIP) calling, visual voicemail, and access to the corporate directory while users are connected to the corporate network over Wi-Fi, either on company premises or over VPN.

Cisco Mobile client software works in conjunction with Cisco Unified Communications Manager and Cisco Unity Connection to extend Cisco enterprise communications applications and services to iPhones.

System Requirements

Network Requirements

The iPhone must be able to connect to the corporate network using voice-ready Wi-Fi.

For optimal user experience when roaming within the corporate wireless network, access points must:

All assign the same IP address to the iPhone (calls will be dropped if the IP address changes)

Have the same SSID (hand-off may be much slower if the SSIDs don't match)

Broadcast their SSID (otherwise the iPhone may bring up a prompt to join another Wi-Fi network, interrupting the call)

Eliminate gaps in coverage as much as possible, including in areas such as elevators, stairways, and outside corridors.

Conduct a thorough site survey to minimize network problems that could affect voice quality. The survey should include verifying non-overlapping channel configurations, access point coverage, and required data and traffic rates; eliminating rogue access points; and identifying and mitigating the impact of potential interference sources.

For more information, see:

The "VoWLAN Design Recommendations" section in the Enterprise Mobility 4.1 Design Guide at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/netsol/ns820/networking_solutions_design_guidances_list.html.

Bluetooth use can worsen connectivity issues. See Bluetooth and Network Interference.

If users will connect to the network while off corporate premises, the iPhone must be able to connect to the corporate network using a solid, high-bandwidth VPN connection.

Voice quality is dependent on connection quality and cannot be guaranteed.

(Release 8.1) Ringtone audio is not sent through Bluetooth headsets.

(Release 8.1) Bluetooth headset buttons for volume and call control are not active for this release.

If you configure devices to pass SIP Digest Authentication and LDAP passwords automatically to the client, these passwords are stored and sent in clear text from the Cisco Unified Communications Manager TFTP server. If you have security concerns, have users manually enter these passwords.

The following options appear on the device configuration page in Cisco Unified Communications Manager, but are not supported in this release:

Normal Mode Codecs

Low Bandwidth Codecs

LDAP Photo Location (supported in release 8.1.1 and later)

Emergency Numbers

MeetingPlace Numbers

For potential unexpected behavior and issues that users may encounter, see the FAQs at http://cisco.com/en/US/products/ps7271/products_user_guide_list.html.

When Cisco Mobile is not running, users receive calls to the office number via Mobile Connect instead of via VoIP.

Cisco Mobile Release 8.0 runs on iOS 4.2 but does not support multitasking.

Except in deployments with Cisco Unified Communications Manager release 7.1.5, Cisco Unified Mobile Communicator 7.1 cannot provide the Dial Via Office feature when it is installed on the same device as Cisco Mobile 8.0.

Important Notes

Upgrading Existing Clients to Cisco Mobile 8.1

Bluetooth and Network Interference

Upgrading Existing Clients to Cisco Mobile 8.1

Follow these instructions to upgrade users from Cisco Mobile Release 8.0 to Release 8.1.

1. In order to support multitasking, make the following changes in Cisco Unified Communications Manager:

Create a dedicated SIP Profile with required settings.

For details, see the Administration Guide for Cisco Mobile 8.x for iPhone at http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps7271/prod_installation_guides_list.html.

Assign this dedicated SIP Profile on the Cisco Dual Mode for iPhone device page for each user of Cisco Mobile.

The changed profile does not affect Cisco Mobile 8.0, so you can make this change for all Cisco Dual Mode for iPhone devices.

2. After you have set up Cisco Unified Communications Manager to support multitasking, send users the information required for them to install and reprovision Cisco Mobile:

The provisioning information for each user, as described in the "Giving Information to Users" section in the Administration Guide for Cisco Mobile for iPhone, as applicable to your deployment.

Instructions to:

Remove Cisco Mobile 8.0 from their phones.

Download and install Cisco Mobile 8.1 from the App Store.

Restart the phone.

Perform any other required steps for a new installation in your environment, as described in the "Giving Information to Users" section in the Administration Guide for Cisco Mobile for iPhone.

Bluetooth and Network Interference

Bluetooth headsets use the same 2.4 GHz frequency as 802.11b, -g, and -n Wi-Fi networks and many other devices including microwave ovens and cordless phones. For this reason, interference is likely to impact Bluetooth transmissions, and Bluetooth headsets may interfere with the Wi-Fi connection to the iPhone. This issue is not specific to Cisco Mobile but can result in dropped or interrupted calls and voice quality issues.

To minimize interference from Bluetooth headsets on the Wi-Fi network, ensure that a strong Wi-Fi signal is available throughout the coverage area, as described in the Network Requirements section in the System Requirements.

Also see the following Apple articles: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1365 and http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21415.

Cisco TAC cannot troubleshoot these issues.
