Notes about Engineering Specials (ESs), Service Updates (SUs), and Windows Service Release (SR) Upgrades
If you run a Linux or Windows Engineering Special (ES), a Service Update (SU), or a Windows Service Release (SR) for any version listed in the "Direct upgrade" tables in the following Supported Cisco Unified Communications Manager Upgrades, you can also upgrade to the target version for that section.
If you install an ES, it may contain fixes that are not included in newer Cisco Unified Communications Manager releases. For example, a fix in the latest 6.1(3)es, 6.1(3.32xx-x), may not be included in 6.1(4x) because the fix was not available prior to the release of 6.1(4x). In this example, a later ES on the 6.1(4x) branch may be required to retain the same fixes.

1 This information is based on historical user documentation.
2 Per the commit presentation, these paths are not supported however there is no blocking in place to prevent these upgrade paths.
3 Beginning with 6.1(2) release, the following paths are allowed and all others are blocked by the Upgrade Infrastructure either on the From or the To side rules. This feature is referred to as native blocking control.
4 6.1(3) to 7.0(1) and 7.0(2) is not a supported upgrade path since new features have been added to 6.1(3) that are not in 7.0(1) or 7.0(2). These features were merged to the 7X load line in the 7.1(1)/7.1(2) release.
5 Available only in unrestricted UCM therefore the only supported upgrade path would be from 7.1(4) unrestricted UCM to 7.1(5) unrestricted UCM. All other upgrade paths are blocked.
6 If encryption is supported, the version would be referred to as restricted. If encryption in NOT supported, the version would be referred to as unrestricted.
7 The upgrade may be limited to a "bridge upgrade".

Backup and Restore System
Use the most recent compatible version of the Backup and Restore System (BARS). Table 40 provides BARS compatibility information for Cisco Unified Communications Manager Release 3.x through Release 4.x.
Note
Because BARS is a Windows-only program, information does not get provided for Cisco Unified Communications Manager Release 5.x and later releases because these represent appliance-based programs. Cisco Unified Communications Manager Release 5.x and Release 5.1x use Disaster Recovery Framework (DRF) instead of BARS. Release 6.0(x) and Release 7.0(x) use Disaster Recovery System (DRS). DRF and DRS do not have separate versions because they are integrated into Cisco Unified Communications Manager.

Data Migration Assistant (DMA) assists you with migrating data from the current Windows-based system (with an SQL Server database) that later gets imported to the Linux-based system (with an Informix database).
Table 72 provides Cisco Data Migration Assistant (DMA) information for Cisco Unified Communications Manager Release 4.x.
Note
If you have installed an (a), (b), (c), and so on, version of Cisco Unified Communications Manager, you only need to match the DMA major version number. For example, if you have Cisco Unified Communications Manager Release 6.1(1b), you may use DMA Release 6.1(1a).
