Objective and Audience

This guide explains how to operate and maintain the Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch for release 5.0. This guide is written for system administrators and technicians.

The system administrator manages the host administrative functions, including configuring and maintaining system parameters, granting group and user IDs, and managing all Cisco MGC files and directories. The system administrator should have an in-depth knowledge of UNIX and a basic knowledge of data and telecommunications networking.

The system technician should be familiar with telecommunication protocols, basic computer software operations, computer terminology and concepts, hierarchical file systems, common UNIX shell commands, log files, the configuration of telephony switching systems, the use of electrical and electronic telephony test equipment, and basic troubleshooting techniques.

Organization

This guide includes the following sections:

1	Starting and Shutting Down the BTS	This chapter tells you how to startup and shutdown the BTS.
2	Managing BTS Users and Commands using EMS	This chapter describes operator interfaces to the BTS and how to manage access and users.
3	Monitoring and Backing Up the BTS	This chapter includes overall BTS maintenance strategies.
4	Operating the BTS	This chapter tells you how to operate the BTS.
5	Managing External Resources	This chapter tells you how to manage external resources provisioned on the BTS using administrative (ADM) commands.
6	Using BTS Measurements	This chapter describes BTS traffic measurements and tells you how to use them.
7	Using the BTS SNMP Agent	The BTS uses a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) agent to communicate with a service provider's network management system (NMS).
A	Feature Tones	BTS supports special tones on subscriber and operator features by sending MGCP messages to the gateways.

Conventions

This document uses the following conventions:

Convention	Indication
bold font	Commands and keywords and user-entered text appear in bold font.
italic font	Document titles, new or emphasized terms, and arguments for which you supply values are in italic font.
[ ]	Elements in square brackets are optional.
{x | y | z }	Required alternative keywords are grouped in braces and separated by vertical bars.
[ x | y | z ]	Optional alternative keywords are grouped in brackets and separated by vertical bars.
string	A nonquoted set of characters. Do not use quotation marks around the string or the string will include the quotation marks.
courier font	Terminal sessions and information the system displays appear in courier font.
< >	Nonprinting characters such as passwords are in angle brackets.
[ ]	Default responses to system prompts are in square brackets.
!, #	An exclamation point (!) or a pound sign (#) at the beginning of a line of code indicates a comment line.
