Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch Reduced Number of Physical Interfaces Review
This document describes the Reduced Number of Network Interfaces feature for the Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch. This feature reduces the number of network interfaces on the Call Agent/Feature Server (CA/FS) and the EMS/BDMS hosts to two network interfaces per host computer. This reduction allows the BTS10200 to run on smaller, or less expensive, host computers. In addition, it creates redundant management local area networks (LANs) for the Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch.

Information About the Reduced Number of Physical Interfaces Feature
The standard network configuration that was supported in Release 3.3 and earlier is shown in Figure 1. The host computer used for the EMS and BDMS required five network interfaces, and the host computer used for the Call Agent/Feature Server required nine interfaces.
The Reduced Number of Network Interfaces feature changes the supported network configuration. This configuration is shown in Figure 2. The two interfaces must be on different network interface cards.
Note
For Telnet, FTP, and so forth, two IP addresses are available in the new configuration.

Operational, Management, and Administrative Interfaces
No changes were made to the operational, management and administrative interfaces of the Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch.
Troubleshooting
TBD.
Installation
Jumpstart has been modified to define the logical IP addresses for the two interfaces (per Figure 2). Extra interfaces are now disabled.
1.
Jumpstart installs only two network interfaces—other interfaces are not configured.
2.
The two network interfaces must be on two different cards (on the standard hardware configuration).
3.
Jumpstart installs the logical IP addresses associated with each interface (as per Figure 2).
4.
The 10-mbps option is removed and the 100Mb/s is forced.
Refer to the Cisco BTS 10200 Softswitch Jumpstart Procedures for Release 4.1 for further information.
Platform Requirements
The parameter MinRequiredNICsOnHost (contains the number of IP addresses on the host) in the platform.cfg is now 8 for CA/FS platforms and 4 for EMS/BS platforms.
In previous releases, the IP Manager removed logical IP addresses when they were brought down administratively. Now, in Release 4.1, the IP Manager does not remove the logical IP addresses when logical IP addresses are brought down administratively.
Cabling
Cabling information is documented in the Cisco BTS 10200 Cabling Procedures document.
