Overview
The 8- and 16-port RJ-21 FXS modules for the Catalyst 4500 series Access Gateway Module are each a high-density analog phone and fax interface. By providing service to analog phones and fax machines, the Foreign Exchange Station (FXS) ports emulate a public switched telephone network (PSTN) central office (CO) or private branch exchange (PBX).
The RJ-21 FXS module is classified as an on-premises (ONS) FXS but provides line-cross protection not usually found in non-Bellcore ONS FXS interfaces. As a result, the FXS module can handle 120/240 VAC shorts on tip or ring. It can also handle low-level faults such as large instantaneous voltage peaks.
The battery voltage DC-DC converter is powered by a filtered +12 V supplied from the Access Gateway Module. The telco power is broken into four separately fused power domains in groups of four ports to increase the reliability of the FXS module. If one subscriber line interface circuit (SLIC) shorts out, it brings down only four ports rather than the whole card.
The front panel of 8-port FXS module contains one RJ-21 connector and eight link LEDs. The front panel of 16-port FXS module contains one RJ-21 connector and sixteen link LEDs.

RJ-21 Connectors
To suit your workplace environment, the connectors are available in three cable-to-connector orientations: 90 degrees, 110 degrees, and 180 degrees.
Because 90-degree RJ-21 connectors have only one screw, they require additional support to hold one side of the connector to the module. We supply a bracket and a velcro strap (see Figure 3) for this purpose.
Figure 3 Bracket and Velcro Strap for the RJ-21 Category 5 Telco Interface Cable Connector
To attach the bracket to the FXS module, follow this procedure:
Step 1
Remove the screws from the FXS module front panel with a flat-blade screwdriver.
Step 2
Align the screws on the bracket with the holes on the FXS module, then tighten them.
Step 3
Align the screw on the 90° RJ-21 connector with the appropriate screw top on the bracket and then tighten the screw.
Step 4
Attach the velcro strap as illustrated in Figure 3.
The FXS module always connects to a breakout box or a patch panel, as shown Figure 4. The connection between the FXS module jack and the breakout box is made by an RJ-21 Category 5 telco interface connector and cable.
Figure 4 RJ-21 FXS Module of the Access Gateway Module Connected to a Breakout Box
Figure 5 shows the pinout convention for the telco RJ-21 (tip and ring on 25 pairs). The top row is ring, the bottom row tip. For the 8-port FXS module, only the eight pairs to the right are used, and the middle set of eight pairs is shorted together but not to ground. For the 16-port FXS module, the sixteen pairs to the right are used for tip and ring, and the remaining pins are used for ground.

Step 5
Using the thumb and forefinger of each hand, simultaneously push the left and right ejector levers in to seat the Access Gateway Module all the way into the backplane connector.
Caution
Always use the ejector levers when installing or removing modules. A module that is only partially seated in the backplane causes the system to halt.
Step 6
Use the flat-head or number 2 Phillips screwdriver to tighten the captive installation screws (Figure 9) on the left and right sides of the Access Gateway Module.
Step 7
Check the status of the Access Gateway Module as follows:
a.
After the module has booted and run diagnostics, ensure that its Status LED is green, indicating that the module is operational.
b.
Enter the show module command to verify that the system acknowledges the Access Gateway Module and reports its Status as ok in the screen display.

After you reinstall the Access Gateway Module, you need to connect the RJ-21 FXS module. Use a standard RJ-21 Category 5 telco connector and cable to connect the FXS module jack to the breakout box, as shown in Figure 4.
Caution
Do not directly connect Octel voice mail servers to the FXS module. You must first connect the servers to a patch panel. Every other output of the Octel voice mail server is a pair of grounds. Connecting these grounds directly to the FXS module results in shorting every alternate port on the module to ground.

RJ-21 FXS Module User Interface Conventions
The RJ-21 FXS module is similar to the 2-port FXS analog interface card (VIC-2FXS). The ports on the RJ-21 FXS module are sequentially numbered, starting with 0 for the rightmost port and increasing by one in the right to left direction. When the 8-port FXS module is located in slot 4, the eight ports are numbered 4/0 to 4/7. When the 16-port FXS module is located in slot 2, the sixteen ports are numbered 2/0 to 2/15.
Configuring FXS Voice Ports
Under most circumstances, the default values are adequate for FXS voice ports. If you need to change these values, follow these procedures:

Troubleshooting the Configuration
If you are having trouble placing a call and you suspect that the problem is associated with the voice-port configuration, performing one or more of the following tasks might resolve the problem:
•
Ping the associated IP address to confirm connectivity, as follows:
Gateway# ping 172.20.59.93
Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 172.20.59.93, timeout is 2 seconds:
Success rate is 100 percent (5/5), round-trip min/avg/max = 1/1/4 ms
If you cannot successfully ping your destination, refer to the Network Protocols Configuration Guide, Part 1.
•
Use the show voice port command to ensure that the port is enabled (administrative state is UP), as follows:
Gateway# show voice port 4/0
Operation State is DORMANT
Administrative State is UP
If the state of the port is DOWN, as in the following display, use the no shutdown command to enable the port. (See the "Activating the Voice Port" section.)
Administrative State is DOWN
Fine-Tuning FXS Voice Ports
Depending on the specifics of your particular network, you might need to fine-tune the FXS voice port commands. Under most circumstances, the default values suffice; however, if you need to change them, perform the following tasks:

Faceplates and Cover Panels Warning
|
Warning
|
Blank faceplates and cover panels serve three important functions: they prevent exposure to hazardous voltages and currents inside the chassis; they contain electromagnetic interference (EMI) that might disrupt other equipment; and they direct the flow of cooling air through the chassis. Do not operate the system unless all cards, faceplates, front covers, and rear covers are in place.
|
Waarschuwing
|

Prevent Accidental Discharge
|
Warning
|
To prevent accidental discharge in the event of a power line cross, route on-premise wiring away from power cables and off-premise wiring, or use a grounded shield to separate the on-premise wiring from the power cables and off-premise wiring. A power line cross is an event, such as a lightning strike, that causes a power surge. Off-premise wiring is designed to withstand power line crosses. On-premise wiring is protected from power line crosses by a device that provides overcurrent and overvoltage protection. Nevertheless, if the on-premise wiring is in close proximity to, or not shielded from, the off-premise wiring or power cables during a lightning strike or power surge, the on-premise wiring can carry a dangerous discharge to the attached interface, equipment, and nearby personnel.
|
Waarschuwing
|

Varoitus
|
Reititä rakennuksen sisäiset johdot pois virtakaapeleiden ja rakennuksen ulkopuolisten johtojen lähettyviltä tai käytä maadoitettua suojaa erottamaan rakennuksen sisäiset johdot virtakaapeleista ja rakennuksen ulkopuolisista johdoista estääksesi verkkojännitelinjan ylityksestä johtuvan purkautumisen. Verkkojännitelinjan ylitys on virtapiikin aiheuttava tapahtuma, kuten salamanisku. Rakennuksen ulkopuoliset johdot on tehty kestämään verkkojännitelinjan ylitys.
