About This Guide


This section discusses the intended audience, scope, and organization of the
Catalyst 1900 Series Installation and Configuration Guide and defines the conventions used to convey instructions and information.

Cisco documentation and additional literature are available in a CD-ROM package, which ships with your product. The Documentation CD-ROM, a member of the Cisco Connection Family, is updated monthly. Therefore, it might be more current than printed documentation. To order additional copies of the Documentation CD-ROM, contact your local sales representative or call customer service. Audience and Scope

This guide is for the trained and qualified networking professional installing and maintaining the Catalyst 1900 series Ethernet switches, also referred to as the Catalyst 1900 switches. We assume that readers of this manual are familiar with the terminology and concepts of Ethernet and local area networking.

This guide describes the functional and physical features of the Catalyst 1900 switches and provides installation procedures, web-based and menu-based standard edition software configuration and management information, troubleshooting information, technical specifications, and cable and connector guidelines and specifications.

Organization

This guide is organized as follows:

The "" chapter describes the switch features and provides examples of the switches in several network configurations.

The "" chapter contains guidelines and procedures for installing the switches on a desk or tabletop, in 19- and 24-inch racks, and on a wall. This chapter also describes how to connect the switches to network devices.

The "" chapter provides an overview of the configuration and management options supported on the switches. This chapter also provides the default configuration settings of the switch, information on accessing the MIB objects and using SNMP, and remote monitoring concepts.

The "" chapter provides information on configuring and managing the switches by using the web console.

The "" chapter provides information on configuring and managing the switches by using the menu console.

The "" chapter describes some problems that might arise and their recommended solutions.

The "" appendix lists the physical characteristics, environmental requirements, power specifications, and agency approvals of the switches.

The "" appendix details the physical characteristics of the connectors on the switches and their associated cabling.

The "" appendix repeats in multiple languages the warnings in this guide.

Catalyst 1900 Cabling and Setup provides instructions for connecting the switch to devices, assigning an IP address to the switch, and displaying the Catalyst 1900 web console.

Catalyst 2820 Series and Catalyst 1900 Series Enterprise Edition Software Configuration Guide describes the Cisco Catalyst 1900/2820 Enterprise Edition Software, which describes additional switch configuration features such as VLANs and the command-line interface.

Catalyst 2820 Series and Catalyst 1900 Series Command Reference describes commands used to configure the switch through the command-line interface, a feature available on the Cisco Catalyst 1900/2820 Enterprise Edition Software.

Note   Means reader take note. Notes contain helpful suggestions or references to materials not contained in this manual.



Caution   
This caution symbol means reader be careful. In this situation, you might do something that could result in equipment damage or loss of data.


Warning   

This warning symbol means danger. You are in a situation that could cause bodily injury. Before you work on any equipment, be aware of the hazards involved with electrical circuitry and be familiar with standard practices for preventing accidents.
