Release Notes for Catalyst 2820 ATM Modules
December 1997
This document describes important notes and caveats for the Catalyst 2820 ATM modules. Supporting documentation is the Catalyst 2820 ATM Modules Installation and Configuration Guide.

The Catalyst 2820 ATM modules use Catalyst 2820 firmware version 7.02 or above. You can check the installed firmware version by using the firmware menu. For firmware upgrade procedures, refer to the Catalyst 2820 Series Installation and Configuration Guide. You can access this document on CCO.
Note
The Catalyst 2820 ATM modules can only be installed in a Catalyst 2820 switch.
Cisco IOS Release 11.3(1)T
Cisco IOS Release 11.3(1)T is already installed on the Catalyst 2820 ATM modules. If the installed Cisco IOS software gets corrupted, use the firmware version 7.02 configuration menu to reinstall the Catalyst 2820 ATM modules Cisco IOS Flash image. For details on how to install the module Flash image, refer to the Catalyst 2820 Series Installation and Configuration Guide.

Password Recovery
If you forget your password for the Catalyst 2820 ATM modules, you can reset the password to the factory default by doing the following:

New Features
Multiple Virtual LANs
Each ATM trunk supports a maximum of 64 active virtual LANs (VLANs) at one time.
Emulated LAN Support
This release of the Catalyst 2820 ATM modules supports multiple emulated LANs (ELANs). You can logically group users on Ethernet and ATM networks by mapping VLANs on the Ethernet network to ELANs on the ATM network.
RFC-1483 PVC Support
The Catalyst 2820 ATM modules support multiple VLAN mappings for RFC-1483 Logical Link Control (LLC) encapsulation. With RFC 1483, you can transport Ethernet frames over PVCs.

Binds a permanent virtual connection (PVC) to or from a VLAN.

Caveats
Upgrading the Module Firmware
If your attempt to upgrade the ATM module firmware fails while the module is in normal operation, the expansion slot LED on the Catalyst 2820 switch turns amber. The module continues normal operation, but the module image stored in the Flash memory is corrupted. When you reset the ATM module, it will not find a valid Cisco IOS image, and the ATM module will not past the power-on self-test (POST). To correct this problem, repeat the firmware upgrade procedure to download a new firmware image on the ATM module.
Closing a Virtual Channel
When you close a permanent virtual connection (PVC) using the no atm pvc command and the ATM interface or link is down, the PVC does not close completely. The internal data structure remains for that PVC, but the show atm vc command will not list the PVC. If you had bound the PVC to a VLAN, the binding also remains after the PVC is closed. However, the wrong virtual circuit descriptor (VCD) number is shown when you use the show atm vlan command. This might cause a problem. To work around this problem, do not close the PVCs using the no atm pvc command when the ATM interface is down. If you want to close PVCs when the ATM interface is down, reset the module after closing PVCs.
Unsupported Cisco IOS Commands
The Cisco IOS ping and traceroute commands are not supported.
Running Configuration
You cannot save your running configuration to a network Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) server.
