Managing File Assignments
You can use the options on the Assignments tab to manage device and file assignments. For example, if a new PIX security appliance software image is available, you can download the file, add it to AUS, and then assign it to one or more devices. (For information on adding images, see Adding Software Images, page 4-2.) This is beneficial when a new file release fixes a security problem that an older version of the file did not address.
You can assign multiple files to a single device. For example, you can assign a PIX security appliance software image, an ASA software image, a PDM image, an ASDM image, an ASA configuration file, and a PIX configuration file to a single device. See Figure 5-1.
You can also assign single files to multiple devices. For example, you can assign the same PIX security appliance software image, ASA software image, ASDM image, or PDM image to many devices. See Figure 5-2.
Note
You cannot assign a PIX or ASA configuration file to multiple devices.

Assigning and Unassigning Files to a Single Device
From the Device Assignment Summary page, you can assign and unassign PIX security appliance software images, ASA software images, ASDM images, PDM images, and configuration files to or from a device. If a new PIX security appliance software image, ASA software image, ASDM image, or PDM image is available, you can unassign the previously assigned image and assign the new image to one or more devices. This is beneficial if the new image or configuration file release fixes a security problem that the older version of the file did not address.
Caution
When changing a PIX security appliance software image or ASA software image, make sure that the existing configuration file will work with the new image. If an incompatible software image is downloaded, the security appliance will drop all unsupported commands and might experience configuration errors.
This procedure describes how to assign files to a device.
Step 1
Select Assignments > Assign Files to a Device. The Device Assignment Summary page appears.
Step 2
Click the radio button for the device to which you want to assign files.
Step 3
Click Assign Files. The Select Images to Assign page appears. Perform tasks as described in Table 5-2.
Step 4
Click OK to assign the files to the device. To exit the page without making any changes, click Cancel.
