System Requirements

Several prerequisites are required before upgrading to ASDM, covered in the following sections.

Hardware Requirements

ASDM software runs on the following platforms:

Cisco ASA 5540 security appliance

Cisco ASA 5520 security appliance

Cisco ASA 5510 security appliance

SSM-10

SSM-20

PIX 515/515E

PIX 525

PIX 535

Note ASDM is not currently supported on PIX 501 or PIX 506/506E hardware.

For more information on minimum hardware requirements, go to the following website:

http://www.cisco.com/cisco/software/navigator.html

Memory Requirements

The minimum memory requirements for your platform depends on the type of licensing you have purchased, which enables different levels of service, and defines the number of interfaces and memory the system can support. Restricted licenses require less memory than Unrestricted licenses.

Unrestricted—An Unrestricted (UR) license allows installation and use of the maximum number of interfaces and RAM supported by the platform. The Unrestricted license supports a redundant `hot standby' system for failover operation to minimize network downtime.

Restricted—A Restricted (R) license limits the number of interfaces supported and the amount of RAM available within the system. A Restricted licensed firewall does not support a redundant system for failover configurations.

If you are a PIX 515 or PIX 515E user with a PIX Version 6.3, you will need to upgrade your memory before performing an upgrade to PIX Version 7.0. PIX Version 7.0 requires at least 64 MB of RAM for unrestricted (UR) and failover (FO) licenses and at least 128 MB of RAM (see Table 1).

For registered users, you can download the software from this URL: http://www.cisco.com/cisco/software/navigator.html. If you are currently not a registered software user, go to this URL to become a registered user: http://tools.cisco.com/RPF/register/register.do.

Connectivity Requirements

The minimum connectivity requirements to perform an upgrade to PIX Version 7.0 are:

A PC or server connected to any network port of the PIX and running TFTP software. (Your PC or server can be connected to the PIX using a switch or a crossover cable).

A DB-9 connector, and rollover cable, and a console connectivity program, such as HyperTerminal or another Terminal Emulation, to talk to the PIX.

Note In PIX Version 7.0, both the crossover cable and serial failover cable are supported in Active/Active failover configurations.
