Upgrading the Boot ROMs in
Cisco 1600 Series Routers

This document describes how to upgrade the boot ROMs in Cisco 1600 series routers.
Tools and Equipment Required
The following tools are required to upgrade the router's boot ROMs:
•Number 1 Phillips screwdriver
•Plastic-leaded chip-carrier (PLCC) extraction tool
•Boot ROM chips
This section contains safety information that you should read before upgrading the boot ROMs in the router.
Before working on a system that has an on/off switch, turn OFF the power and unplug the power cord.
Before opening the chassis, disconnect the telephone-network cables to avoid contact with telephone-network voltages.
Do not work on the system or connect or disconnect cables during periods of lightning activity.
Do not touch the power supply when the power cord is connected. For systems with a power switch, line voltages are present within the power supply even when the power switch is off and the power cord is connected. For systems without a power switch, line voltages are present within the power supply when the power cord is connected.
Read the installation instructions before you connect the system to its power source.
Ultimate disposal of this product should be handled according to all national laws and regulations.
Before working on equipment that is connected to power lines, remove jewelry (including rings, necklaces, and watches). Metal objects will heat up when connected to power and ground and can cause serious burns or weld the metal object to the terminals.
Only trained and qualified personnel should be allowed to install or replace this equipment.
Hazardous network voltages are present in WAN ports regardless of whether power to the router is OFF or ON. To avoid electric shock, use caution when working near WAN ports. When detaching cables, detach the end away from the router first.
Preventing Electrostatic Discharge Damage
Before installing a boot ROM, read the electrostatic discharge (ESD) instructions in this section to prevent damage to the equipment. ESD is a discharge of stored static electricity that can damage equipment and impair electrical circuitry. It occurs when electronic components are improperly handled and can result in complete or intermittent failures.
Following are guidelines for preventing ESD damage:
•Before opening the chassis, turn the router power switch to OFF ( O ).
•Disconnect the power cable to turn off power to the router.
•Always use an ESD-preventive wrist or ankle strap and ensure that it makes good skin contact.
•Avoid contact between equipment and clothing. The wrist or ankle strap only protects the equipment from ESD voltages on the body; ESD voltages on clothing can still cause damage.
•Handle printed circuit cards by the edges only; avoid touching the components, traces, or any connector pins.
•Place a removed card component side up on an antistatic surface or in a static shielding bag.
•Do not remove the wrist or ankle strap until the installation is complete.
CautionTo avoid damaging the equipment, periodically check the resistance value of the antistatic strap. The measurement should be between 1 and 10 megohms (Mohms).
Removing the Router Cover
Take the following steps to remove the router cover:
Step 1 Turn OFF the power by pressing the power switch on the rear panel to the off ( O ) position.
Step 2 Disconnect all cables from the rear panel.
Step 3 Place the router upside down a flat, secure surface, such as a desk or table.
Step 4 Using the Phillips screwdriver, remove the screw at the center of the underside of the router, as shown in Figure 1. Put the screw in a safe place.

Step 5 Using both hands to hold the top and bottom of the router together, turn the router over so that it is right-side up on the flat surface and the rear panel is facing toward you.
Step 6 Using the Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws from the rear panel of the router, as shown in Figure 2. Put the screws in a safe place.

Step 7 Turn the router so that the rear panel is facing away from you, then use one hand to hold the bottom half of the router in place on the flat surface, as shown in Figure 3.
Step 8 Place the other hand on top of the router. With your fingers, grasp the lip of the cover that hangs over the rear panel of the router and gently pull the cover up and away from the bottom section of the router. (See Figure 3.)

Step 9 Set the router cover in a safe place and follow the instructions in the next section, "Replacing the Boot ROMs."
Replacing the Boot ROMs
Follow the steps in this section to replace the boot ROMs.
Step 1 Refer to Figure 4 to locate the six boot ROM sockets on the router card. The sockets are labeled FW1 through FW6. The boot ROM chips will be installed in these sockets.

Step 2 Using the PLCC extraction tool, gently remove the boot ROMs that are already installed in the sockets, as shown in Figure 5, and set them on a nonconductive surface.

Step 3 Insert the new boot ROMs in the sockets so that the flat corner on the beveled edge of the ROM chip fits into the flat corner of the ROM socket. (See Figure 6.)
CautionMake sure to install the boot ROMs with the printed label up. Installing the boot ROMs with the printed label down damages the boot ROMs.

You have completed the boot ROM upgrade and can now replace the router cover according to the instructions in the following section, "Replacing the Router Cover."
Replacing the Router Cover
Take the following steps to replace the router cover:
Step 1 Align the top and bottom sections of the router, making sure that the two hooks on the front of the cover fit into the corresponding vents in the bottom section.

Step 3 Turn the router so that the rear panel is facing you, and replace the two screws that you removed from the rear panel earlier.
Step 4 Using both hands to hold the router top and bottom together, turn the router upside down so that the top of the router is resting on the flat surface. Replace the screw that you removed earlier from the underside of the router.
Step 5 Place the router right-side up on the flat surface and reconnect all cables to the router.
Step 6 Turn ON the power by pressing the power switch to the on ( | ) position.
