Q. What is CiscoWorks LMS Portal?

A. CiscoWorks LMS Portal is the launch point for all LMS applications. It serves as an interface, launch point and top-level navigation for the frequently used functions in the application.

Q. Is CiscoWorks LMS Portal the home page for all LMS applications?

A. Yes. CiscoWorks LMS Portal is the home page for all LMS applications.

Q. What are portlets and views in a Portal?

A. Portlets are application features organized and displayed in a view in CiscoWorks LMS Portal. These portlets are organized into views that are displayed as tabs in LMS Portal.

For example, The Product Installed portlet in CS View (Common Services) has information about the names of the installed product, their versions and their status (licence or evaluation).

Q. Why do I need to use views in a Portal?

A. In LMS Portal, a view is a page that displays a set of relevant information. LMS Portal comes with four default views such as Functional, System, Network and CS (Common Services). You can also create your own views and add content them.

For example, you can create a view named Network Alert, and add the Syslog Alerts and DFM High Severity Alerts (portlets) to monitor any alerts in the network.

Q. Why do I need to use portlets when the corresponding details are available in the respective pages of all the applications?

A. The portlets help you to access data with a single or double click, instead of navigating through several pages.

For example, you can access Change Audit Report in RME in just two clicks using CiscoWorks LMS Portal. However, in LMS 2.6, it would take seven clicks to launch Change Audit Report and access the respective data.

Q. Is there any link in the portlet from where I can reach the application for further information?

A. Yes. Each Application view has an Application Menu portlet from where you can navigate directly to the application. For instance, CM View has the Application Menu portlet. For more information, see Adding Application Menu Portlets.

Q. Why do I need to use as Public portal?

A. You need to use a Public portal to view the newly added portlets in the views by the administrator.

Q. Can I modify a Public portal?

A. No. You cannot modify the portlets in a Public portal.

Only a Network Administrator, Super Administrator, or a System Administrator can add or delete views and portlets in Public portal. For more information on Public portal, see Making Your Portal Private or Public.

Q. Can I switch between Private Portal and Public Portal?

A. Yes. You can switch between Private Portal and Public portals. To switch from Private to Public, go to CiscoWorks LMS portal, and select the Public button at the top right corner of the page.

Q. How are views classified by default?

By default, the views are classified into Functional, System, Network and CS View.

You can add a new view to CiscoWorks LMS Portal application and customize the information in the view. For more information, see Adding Views to CiscoWorks LMS Portal.

Q. Why are all portlet icons not displayed in the Functional View?

A. All portlet icons are not displayed in the Functional View, because you cannot configure, delete or modify the Functional View.

Q. What is a System View?

A. The System View contains the system related portlets. For more information, see System View.

Q. What is a Network View?

A. The Network View contains network related portlets. For more information, see Network View.

Q. Can I customize System and Network view?

A. Yes. You can customize both System and Network views.

Q. Is there any way to view the list of all devices in DCR?

A. Yes. You can view the list of all devices in the Device and Credential Repository using the Frequently Used portlet.

You can configure the URL of the DCR report page and view the information on all of the devices in DCR. You can also save all your frequently used URLs in the Frequently Used Links portlet. For more information, see Adding Frequently Used Links.

Q. What is the default view when I log into CiscoWorks LMS Portal for the first time?

A. The Functional View is the default view when you log into CiscoWorks LMS Portal for the first time. For more information on Functional View, see Functional View.

However, you can also set any views as default view after you log into CiscoWorks LMS Portal.

Q. Can I restore a default view?

A. Yes. You can restore a default view. For more information, see Restore Default Settings of a View.

Q. Can I add a new view?

A. Yes. You can add a new view. For more information, see Adding a View.

Q. Can I rename a view?

A. Yes. You can rename any view or tab except the Functional View. However, two views cannot have the same name. For more information, Renaming a View.

Q. Can a view be copied?

A. Yes. You can copy a view. However, when you copy any new view, the contents of the previous view gets overwritten. For more information, see Copying Portlets to a New View.

Q. Can the order of views or tabs be changed in LMS Portal?

A. Yes. You can re-arrange the order of views in LMS Portal. For more information, see Setting the Display Order of the Views.

Q. How can I view the portlet icons in a portlet?

A. You can view the icons in the portlet by moving the mouse over the right corner of the title bar of a portlet. For more information, see Portlet Icons.

Q. What are the functions of the portlet icons?

A. Using portlet icons you can change the look and feel of the portlet, minimize, maximize, configure and delete a portlet. You can also view the online help details of the respective portlet. For more information, see Portlet Icons.

Q. I have deleted a portlet from a view. Can I add this portlet back into the view?

A. Yes. You can add the same portlet back into the view. For more information, see Adding a Portlet.

Q. I have deleted a portlet after configuring it. Can I restore the configured portlet?

A. Yes. However you can do this only with single instance portlets, (portlets that cannot be added more than once) such as Change Audit portlet. If you add a single instance portlet again to the same view, the configurations are retained.

However, if you add a multi-instance portlet (portlets that can be added more than once) such as RSS, IFrame the configurations cannot be restored.

Q. How can I add a portlet?

A. You can add a portlet using the Add Portlet button that is displayed at the top right corner of the Portal page. For more information, see Adding a Portlet.

Q. Can I change the color or title of a portlet?

A. Yes. You can change the color and title of a portlet. For more information, see Changing the Look of Your Portlets.

Q. Can I restore the default portlet after customizing the portlet?

A. Yes. You can restore the default portlet by clicking the Reset button after customizing the portlet using the Look and Feel icon. For more information, see Changing the Look of Your Portlets.

Q. Is there any portlet that I can access to view the MAC, IP address, host name, device name and other details?

A. Yes. You can use Object Finder portlet to view the MAC address, IP address, hostname, device name and other details. For more information, see Searching Devices, Jobs, and End-hosts with the Object Finder Portlet.

Q. Are there any portlets that are not LMS application specific?

A. Yes, portlets such as IFrame, RSS, which are not LMS application specific. For more information on IFrame see, Adding Portlets by IFrame. For more information on RSS, see Adding Portlets by RSS.

Q. How can I change the name of IFrame portlet or resize it?

A. You can change the name and size of the IFrame portlet using the Look and Feel option in the IFrame portlet. For more information, see Adding Portlets by IFrame.

Q. What is an IFrame portlet?

A. Intra Frame (IFrame) portlet allows you to open a new and multiple pages inside the same browser window. For more information, see Adding Portlets by IFrame.

Q. What is an RSS portlet?

A. Really Simple Syndication (RSS) is an XML-based format used to distribute Web content (such as news headlines). RSS helps webcontent publishers to easily create and disseminate the current news headlines and URLs. For more information, see Adding Portlets by RSS.

Q. What is an N-Hop portlet?

A. N-Hop View portlet is an HTML-based topology. It is available as a part of CiscoWorks LMS Portal and is much faster than the regular Campus Manager Topology services.

This feature allows you to cross-launch CiscoWorks applications, such as CiscoView, Device Center, SWIM (Software Image Management). For more information, see N-Hop View.

Q. What is a layout?

A. A layout is a design where information is organized in a specific manner. In CiscoWorks LMS Portal, it refers to the way in which the portlets are arranged in a view. For more information, see Changing the Columnar Layout.

Q. How can I select a layout and how many types of layouts are there in CiscoWorks?

A. You can select a layout using the Add Portlet button that is displayed at the top right corner of CiscoWorks LMS Portal. There are seven types of layout. For more information, see Changing the Columnar Layout.

Q. How can I add the links that are in the LMS 2.6 home page into the Frequently Used Links portlet?

A. Go to Common Services home page. Right click on any link, copy the URL and add it to the Frequently Used Links portlet.

Q. How can I view the jobs which are in the Scheduled state on my server?

A. You can view the jobs that are in the Scheduled state in the Job Information Status portlet (Common Services). For more information, see Job Information Status.

Q. Is there any option to view only my jobs in the Job Information Status portlet?

A. Yes. Go to the Job Information Status portlet in CS View and click the configuration icon. Enable the Show Only My Jobs check box to display only your jobs in Job Information Status portlet.

Q. If I am an Approver, how can I see the jobs that are waiting for approval?

A. To view the jobs that are waiting for approval, go to RME View and add the Jobs Approval portlet. For more information, see RME Job Approval.

Q. Can I view the recently added devices in the portlet?

A. To view the recently added devices in the portlet, click the Configuration icon in the corresponding portlet and modify the Refresh time. For more information, see This chapter contains:.

Troubleshooting Suggestions

The following section lists the troubleshooting suggestions to resolve errors and other problems with CiscoWorks LMS Portal.

Why am I able not able to add some portlets more than once in a view?

I have deleted a portlet from a View. Can I add this portlet back into the View?

After entering the URL in the IFrame portlet, it occupies the entire screen? Can I minimize the size of an IFrame portlet

Why do the portlets not fit in the page after I change the layout? After I drag and drop the portlet, it moves back to its earlier position.

I am not able to view the launch point portlets (For instance, Common Services portlet, Resource Manager Essentials portlet and so on) for the corresponding applications in the Functional view?

I have installed LMS 3.0.1 application, but I cannot view the Portal home page?

What should I do if loading a portlet takes more than two minutes?

Q. Why am I able not able to add some portlets more than once in a view?

A. You can add portlets that are multi-instanceable (can be added more than once) such as IFrame, RSS and Job Information Status more than once in a view. However, you cannot add portlets that are single instanceable (can be added only once) such as Change Audit more than once in a view.

Q. I have deleted a portlet from a View. Can I add this portlet back into the View?

A. Yes. You can add the same portlet back into the View. For more information, see Adding a Portlet.

Q. After entering the URL in the IFrame portlet, it occupies the entire screen? Can I minimize the size of an IFrame portlet

A. Yes. You can minimize the size of an IFrame portlet. For more information, see IFrame, step number 7.

Q. Why do the portlets not fit in the page after I change the layout? After I drag and drop the portlet, it moves back to its earlier position.

A. After changing the layout you must arrange the portlets accordingly to their sizes. You must move the portlet into its new location only after the two arrows appear on either side of the portlet. For more information, see Moving Portlets in Your View.

Q. I am not able to view the launch point portlets (For instance, Common Services portlet, Resource Manager Essentials portlet and so on) for the corresponding applications in the Functional view?

A. Go to Common Services Application Registration page > Server Home Page Admin Application Registration and register the application. If you are still not able to view the details, contact TAC with the portal log details.

Q. I have installed LMS 3.0.1 application, but I cannot view the Portal home page?

A. Install LMS 3.0.1 and enter /server name:1741/cwph/home.do in the URL field to access the earlier LMS applications. Then contact TAC with the Portal log details to access the LMS 3.0.1 application and the Portal homepage.

Q. What should I do if loading a portlet takes more than two minutes?

A. If loading a portlet takes more than two minutes, contact TAC with the Portal log details. To see the Portal log details go to:

Windows: NMSROOT/log/MDC/tomcat/logs/lmsportal.log.

Solaris: /var/adm/csoopx/log/lmsportal.log.

Q. What should I do if the error message " server unreachable/invalid certificate" appears?

A. If the server is in standalone mode , do the following:

You can check whether the self-signed certificate is valid or invalid. To know the certificate details, go to Server > Security page in Common Services application.

If the certificate is invalid, re-import the certificates. For more information, on importing the certificates, see Creating Self-signed certificates section in User Guide for Common Services 3.2.

If you are unable to ping the server using host name, then the portlet displays the error message.

You can configure the server with the Domain Name Server.

If the server is in Master/Slave setup, do the following:

Check whether the certificates of Master or Slave is valid or invalid. To know the certification details, go to Device and Credentials > Admin> Mode Settings page in Common Services application.

Check whether all servers in Master/Slave setup are reachable.

If the certificate is invalid, you can re-import the certificates. For more information, see Setting up Peer Server Certificate section in User Guide for Common Services 3.2.
