Printing Network Topology Information
As a network administrator, you need to understand your network topology. You want a graphical representation of the devices in your network, and you want a listing of end-user stations. You can use this information:
•
To plan network changes.
•
To circulate information about your network topology.
•
To help you obtain an inventory of your network devices.
•
To help you solve network problems if your network management platform is unavailable (perhaps due to the network problems).
This scenario focuses on obtaining a graphical view of your network and a list of end-user stations. To do this, see these sections:

In this scenario, you will use these applications:
•
Topology Services
•
User Tracking
How to Do It—Procedure
Use these procedures to obtain a physical network topology and a list of end-user stations:
1.
Discover Your Network
2.
Print a List of Layer 2 Devices
3.
Print the Layer 2 View
4.
Print a List of End-User Stations
Discover Your Network
To discover your network:
Step 1
Set up ANI Server discovery in the CiscoWorks Desktop. From the CiscoWorks desktop, select Server Configuration > Setup > ANI Server Admin.
Step 2
Refer to User Guide for CiscoWorks Common Services for a detailed explanation of the procedures involved in setting up and starting the discovery process.
Before proceeding with the remainder of the procedure, you must wait until the discovery process is complete. If you attempt to start Topology Services before discovery is complete, Topology Services starts, and the status message Discovery appears, warning that discovery is still in progress.
Print a List of Layer 2 Devices
To print a list of Layer 2 devices in your network, including their device names, IP addresses, device types, and status:
Step 1
From the CiscoWorks desktop, select Campus Manager > Topology Services.
Step 2
Expand the Network Views folder by clicking the plus sign next to the folder.
Step 3
Click Layer 2 View.
You can customize the table by rearranging the order of the columns and by clicking on a column heading to sort the entries by the data contained in the column.
Step 4
From the Topology Services menu bar, select File > Print....
Your printout should look similar to Figure 12-1.

Print the Layer 2 View
To print a graphical view of the Layer 2 devices:
Step 1
From the Topology Services window, select Layer 2 View.
Step 2
Select View > Display View.
The Layer 2 view appears.
Step 3
Choose a layout for the view from the View > Relayout menu. In this scenario, you choose View > Relayout > Symmetric.
You can include device names on the view by selecting View > Display Labels > Show Sysname.
However, you might not need to display the domain name suffix; in this case, you can exclude this information from the device name. To do this:
a.
Select Edit > Map Preferences....
b.
Click Edit Defaults....
c.
In the Domain Suffix field, enter the domain suffix that you want to exclude if it is not already present. This could be in the form of .domain_name.com.
d.
Click the check box for Trim Domain Suffix on Labels.
e.
Click Apply in the Client Default Values window and click OK to close the window.
f.
Click Apply in the Client Map Properties window and click OK to close the window.
From the Topology Services menu bar, select File > Print All....
Your printout should look similar to Figure 12-2. You can also choose to print only the visible portion of the view by selecting File > Print Visible....
You can use a similar procedure to print a graphical view of other network views, e.g., fabrics, switch clouds, VTP views.

Print a List of End-User Stations
Before you print a list of end stations, make sure the User Tracking discovery has been performed.
To print a list of end-user stations:
Step 1
From the CiscoWorks desktop, select Campus Manager > User Tracking.
The User Tracking window appears containing a list of end-user stations if you have configured it to show all end-user stations when the application is started.
Otherwise, you can select Query > Show All or a customized query to show desired end-user stations. In this case, you have User Tracking set to show all end-user stations when you start the application.
Step 2
Click the column heading to sort the list according to the elements in the column. For example, click UserName to sort the list by user name.
Step 3
Select File > Print... > Main Table.
Your printout should look similar to Figure 12-3.
Tip
For best results, before printing, set your printer to landscape orientation.

Where You Should End Up—Verification
You now have printed graphical views of Layer 2 devices. You also have tabular listings of LAN edge devices, switches, and end-user stations.
Keep this information about your network. As you make changes to your network topology, you will want to regenerate this information to keep your information current.
