After installing NCM Disk 1, you must install NCM Disk 2. See the "Installing NCM Disk 2" section.
Note
The term BASEDIR represents the location where NCM domain manager is installed. By default, BASEDIR represents the /opt/InCharge directory for Solaris, the C:\InCharge directory for Windows, or your specified path.
Installing NCM Disk 1 on Solaris
Note
You must be a UNIX superuser to install Disk 1 on Solaris.
Perform the following steps to install NCM Disk 1 on Solaris systems:
Step 1
Mount the CD-ROM:
•
If the Volume Manager is running, it automatically mounts the
CD-ROM to /cdrom/ncm_disk1.•
If the Volume Manager is not running, use the mount command:
# mount -o ro -F hsfs DEVICE /mntWhere DEVICE is your CD-ROM. For example,
# mount -o ro -F hsfs /dev/dsk/c0t6d0s0 /mntFor device information, ask your System Administrator.
Step 2
Change directory to the mounted CD-ROM by doing one of the following:
•
If the Volume Manager is running, enter the following command:

If the Volume Manager is not running, enter the following command:
# cd /mnt/solaris2Step 3
Install Disk 1 using the sminstall command:
# ./sminstall <BASEDIR> APPLICATIONSCisco recommends installing Disk 1 under /opt/InCharge, referred to as BASEDIR. All software is installed under BASEDIR/smarts.
For example:
# ./sminstall /opt/InCharge APPLICATIONSAt this point, the requirements check is automatically performed. The progress and check results are printed to the console and logged to a file. Upon completion, the results are appended to a file of the same name in the BASEDIR/smarts/conf/install directory.
If the system fails the requirements check, you are prompted to verify whether or not you want to continue. At this point, you should discontinue the installation and investigate why the check failed.
The following prompt appears:
This program is about to install the product <product> into the directory <BASEDIR>. Are you sure you want to continue [n] yStep 4

4 Licensing Network Connectivity Monitor
After Disk1 (NCM domain manager) and Disk 2 (NCM domain consolidation) are installed, the software must be licensed before it can be used.
Contact Cisco TAC to obtain either an NCM trial license (also called an evaluation license) or a permanent license. In either instance, Cisco provides one license for NCM. This license covers both NCM domain consolidation and NCM domain manager features. See the Licensing Notes for CiscoWorks Network Connectivity Monitor for information on how to contact Cisco to obtain a license.
NCM uses version 7.2 of the FLEXlm licensing software from Globetrotter Software, Inc. The FLEXlm License Server must run on the machine on which NCM domain consolidation (with the Global Manager) is installed.
See the "Installing a Trial License" section for information on installing licenses.
Installing a Trial License
When you receive your trial license file (sent by e-mail), you should copy the NCM domain consolidation license file, trial.dat, to the BASEDIR/smarts/local/conf directory (for example, C:\InCharge5\smarts\local\conf on Windows), and copy it to the NCM domain manager BASEDIR/smarts/conf directory (for example, C:\InCharge\smarts\conf on Windows). Once the license is installed, the system must be restarted before you can begin using the Network Connectivity Monitor software.
Note
During the installation of Disk 2, a file named trial.dat is installed to the BASEDIR/smarts/local/conf directory. However, this file is empty and must be replaced by a valid evaluation license.
See the User Guide for CiscoWorks Network Connectivity Monitor for information about installing a permanent license.
After you have installed either a permanent or an evaluation license, you can begin using NCM. See the "Where to Go Next" section for more information.
5 Where to Go Next
After you have installed the required CDs and a license, you must deploy NCM before you can begin using NCM. See the Installation Guide for CiscoWorks Network Connectivity Monitor for more information.
After you perform the required startup tasks, you are ready to monitor and troubleshoot your NCM environment.
For information about NCM, see the User Guide for CiscoWorks Network Connectivity Monitor. You can access this document in PDF in the Documentation directory on the NCM product CD.

Technical Assistance Center
The Cisco TAC is available to all customers who need technical assistance with a Cisco product, technology, or solution. Two levels of support are available: the Cisco TAC website and the Cisco TAC Escalation Center. The avenue of support that you choose depends on the priority of the problem and the conditions stated in service contracts, when applicable.
We categorize Cisco TAC inquiries according to urgency:
•
Priority level 4 (P4)—You need information or assistance concerning Cisco product capabilities, product installation, or basic product configuration.
•
Priority level 3 (P3)—Your network performance is degraded. Network functionality is noticeably impaired, but most business operations continue.
•
Priority level 2 (P2)—Your production network is severely degraded, affecting significant aspects of business operations. No workaround is available.
•
Priority level 1 (P1)—Your production network is down, and a critical impact to business operations will occur if service is not restored quickly. No workaround is available.
Cisco TAC Website
You can use the Cisco TAC website to resolve P3 and P4 issues yourself, saving both cost and time. The site provides around-the-clock access to online tools, knowledge bases, and software. To access the Cisco TAC website, go to this URL:
All customers, partners, and resellers who have a valid Cisco service contract have complete access to the technical support resources on the Cisco TAC website. Some services on the Cisco TAC website require a Cisco.com login ID and password. If you have a valid service contract but do not have a login ID or password, go to this URL to register:
http://tools.cisco.com/RPF/register/register.do
If you are a Cisco.com registered user, and you cannot resolve your technical issues by using the Cisco TAC website, you can open a case online at this URL:
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/support/index.html
If you have Internet access, we recommend that you open P3 and P4 cases through the Cisco TAC website so that you can describe the situation in your own words and attach any necessary files.
Cisco TAC Escalation Center
The Cisco TAC Escalation Center addresses priority level 1 or priority level 2 issues. These classifications are assigned when severe network degradation significantly impacts business operations. When you contact the TAC Escalation Center with a P1 or P2 problem, a Cisco TAC engineer automatically opens a case.
To obtain a directory of toll-free Cisco TAC telephone numbers for your country, go to this URL:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/687/Directory/DirTAC.shtml
Before calling, please check with your network operations center to determine the level of Cisco support services to which your company is entitled: for example, SMARTnet, SMARTnet Onsite, or Network Supported Accounts (NSA). When you call the center, please have available your service agreement number and your product serial number.
