Using BBSD

The Cisco Building Broadband Service Director (BBSD) is an optional, standalone feature module included with the BBSM software package. The BBSD software enables a central system in the data center to manage remote BBSM systems. The primary functions include backing up key BBSM system data, performing centralized reporting across a group of BBSM servers, and pushing BBSM web content pages (ASP files called BBSM page sets) across a group of BBSM servers in the field. BBSD stores BBSM server configuration data, which enables you to restore a BBSM server and provides an interface for sending minor software patches to BBSM servers.

BBSD does not come pre-installed and cannot be installed on the same server as BBSM. To maintain database compatibility between BBSM and BBSD, you must install BBSD on the BBSD server when BBSM 5.2 is installed on the BBSM server. For additional information, refer to the Cisco BBSM and BBSD Installation Guide. BBSD is compatible with BBSM 5.2, as well as any version of BBSM 5.1.

Note If you are installing the BBSM software on your own server, make sure that the BBSM external NIC is connected and active before the final reboot of the BBSM installation. If the BBSM external NIC is not active, MSDE does not listen on that interface, and BBSD will be unable to connect to the BBSM server. To resolve this problem, restart MSSQLSERVER service while the external NIC is connected.

The BBSD package comes with MSDE as the default database, which is adequate for evaluation purposes but is not intended for production BBSD environments. We recommend that you upgrade the BBSD system to use the full Microsoft SQL Server software before placing the system into a production mode.

Caution For BBSM servers that are customer-installed, the user is prompted for a BBSD username and password. BBSM creates a Windows user account using this username and password. This login is required for BBSD to access the BBSM server. BBSD stores a username and password for each BBSM server. For the BBSD to connect to each BBSM server, the stored username and password must match the Windows BBSD login on the BBSM server.

Launching and Configuring BBSD

To launch BBSD, double-click the BBSD desktop icon, or choose Start > Programs > BBSD. The BBSD home page appears. (See Figure B-1.)

Figure B-1 BBSD Home Page

BBSD offers four main menus:

Setup

Operations

Usage Reports

Web Content

This appendix explains each of these menus and the various BBSD features. Examples of output such as group lists, server lists, maintenance scheduling, and user security information are included. Clicking any of the four menu items reveals submenus on the purple bar below the menu bar. Clicking a submenu opens the gray navigational bar to the left.

User Security Menu

Use the User Security menu to add, update, delete, or view information for each user. During the BBSD installation, the application creates a BBSD administrator account, BBSDAdmin, which has access to all BBSD web pages. The BBSD administrator can create user accounts and assign permissions for each user. BBSD does not permit anonymous logins. Figure B-3 shows the introductory page for the User Security menu.

Add User

Choose this option to add a new username and password to the BBSD Windows user group. A new user account does not have any permissions. Therefore, after you create a new user account, you must assign at least one of four permissions to the account. Each user group can access specific BBSD web pages and usage reports.

Usernames and passwords have certain characteristics and requirements, which are described in more detail in Tables B-1 and B-2.

Step 3 Click Save. Although all servers belonging to one group can have the same maintenance interval number, every server has its own maintenance interval. If the maintenance interval is 6, the system is backed up every six hours. If the maintenance interval is 0, BBSD does not attempt to back up that server. The smaller the integer, the more frequent the backups.

The following occurs when the maintenance interval is reached:

All user tables from the BBSM server database are backed up.

All files and subfolders in the c:\atcom\ekgnkm directory on the BBSM server are backed up and retained indefinitely.

The Transaction_History table on the BBSM server is truncated to a maximum of 1 month if the server's setup data specifies to do so.

Note BBSD can restore MSDE data including the port map and web files, but it does not execute all of the logic that WEBconfig executes. Consequently, if an item, such as a site, is deleted with WEBconfig, or if a BBSM server is replaced with a new one, BBSD will not be able to restore all of the necessary settings for BBSM to be operational. For example, report pages for specific sites will not be available, clients configured with static IP addressing will not connect following a BBSD restore, Windows 2000 Server DHCP scope is not configured properly, customized page set and RADIUS secret changes in WEBconfig are missing. If you also need to restore the registry settings, continue with Step 7. Otherwise, continue to the Restore Port Map section.
