This feature roadmap lists the Cisco IOS XE features documented in the Cisco IOS XE High Availability Configuration Guide and maps them to the documents in which they appear. The roadmap is organized so that you can select your release train and see the features in that release. Find the feature name you are searching for and click on the URL in the "Where Documented" column to access the document containing that feature.

Many legacy features have been incorporated into the configuration files, and these features may not have entries in this roadmap. For the latest feature information and caveats, see the release notes for your platform and software release.

Feature and Release Support

Table 1 lists High Availability feature support for the following Cisco IOS XE software release trains:

Cisco IOS XE Release 2

Use Cisco Feature Navigator to find information about platform support and software image support. Cisco Feature Navigator enables you to determine which Cisco IOS XE software images support a specific software release, feature set, or platform. To access Cisco Feature Navigator, go to http://www.cisco.com/go/cfn. An account on Cisco.com is not required.


Note Table 1 lists only the Cisco IOS XE software release that introduced support for a given feature in a given Cisco IOS XE software release train. Unless noted otherwise, subsequent releases of that Cisco IOS XE software release train also support that feature.


Table 1 lists the most recent release of each software train first and the features in alphabetical order within the release.

This feature enhances the authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) capability to meet high availability (HA) criteria for locally terminated Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP) over Ethernet (PPPoE) and PPPoEoX sessions, where X represents VLAN, or QinQ.

Dual Cisco IOS processes on the same RP

This features allows a standby IOS process to be available on the same Route Processor as the active IOS process. This standby IOS process can be switched to in the event of an IOS failure, and can also be used to upgrade sub-package software in some scenarios as the standby IOS process in an ISSU upgrade. On the Cisco ASR 1000 Series Routers, IOS runs as one of many processes within the operating system.

Enhanced SNMP Support for High Availability

This document describes the enhancements and modifications made to the Cisco IOS Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) infrastructure to support SSO for Route Processors (RPs).

This feature extends high availability (HA) features, nonstop forwarding and stateful switchover (NSF/SSO) and In Service Software Upgrade (ISSU), functionality to IPv6 protocols and applications.

IPv6: NSF and Graceful Restart for MP-BGP IPv6 Address Family

The graceful restart capability is supported for IPv6 BGP unicast, multicast, and VPNv6 address families, enabling Cisco nonstop forwarding (NSF) functionality for BGP IPv6. The BGP graceful restart capability allows the BGP routing table to be recovered from peers without keeping the TCP state. NSF continues forwarding packets while routing protocols converge, therefore avoiding a route flap on switchover.

IPv6: RIPng Nonstop Forwarding

IPv6 Routing Information Protocol (RIP) supports nonstop forwarding (NSF). RIP registers as an IPv6 NSF client. Doing so has the benefit of using RIP routes installed in the Cisco Express Forwarding table until RIP has converged on the standby.

IPv6: Static Route Nonstop Forwarding

IPv6 static routes support Cisco nonstop forwarding (NSF). NSF continues forwarding packets while routing protocols converge, therefore avoiding a route flap on switchover.

ISSU

The In Service Software Upgrade (ISSU) feature allows Cisco IOS XE software to be updated or otherwise modified while packet forwarding continues. In most networks, planned software upgrades are a significant cause of downtime. ISSU allows Cisco IOS XE software to be modified while packet forwarding continues, which increases network availability and reduces downtime caused by planned software upgrades.

NSF/SSO (Nonstop Forwarding with Stateful Switchover)

Cisco Nonstop Forwarding (NSF) works with the Stateful Switchover (SSO) feature in Cisco IOS XE Software. NSF works with SSO to minimize the amount of time a network is unavailable to its users following a switchover. Stateful Switchover (SSO) maintains the layer two connectivity protocols between devices while Nonstop Forwarding (NSF) continues to forward IP packets during the route convergence time. The result is a transparent Route Processor (RP) failure; there are no loss sessions or route flaps in the network.

This feature provides stateful switchover (SSO) support for Frame Relay. With SSO, Frame Relay dynamic state information is synchronized between the active Route Processor (RP) and standby RP.

This feature provides stateful switchover (SSO) support for the Cisco Gateway Load Balancing Protocol (GLBP). With SSO, GLBP can detect when a router is failing over to the secondary Route Processor (RP) and continue in its current GLBP group state.

This feature provides stateful switchover (SSO) support for High-Level Data Link Control (HDLC). HDLC SSO will synchronize dynamic HDLC information between a Primary Route Processor (RP) and a Secondary RP.

This feature provides stateful switchover (SSO) support for Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) snooping. SSO with Layer 2 multicast state between the primary and the secondary supervisors. This feature allows the user to see virtually no interruption in multicast streams upon supervisor switchover.

This feature provides stateful switchover (SSO) support for Multilink Point-to-Point Protocol (PPP). With SSO, specific PPP state information is synchronized between the active Route Processor (RP) and standby RP. Single-link PPP and Multilink PPP (MLP) sessions are maintained during RP switchover for IP connections only.
