Introduction

Cisco IOS software delivers a focused, end-to-end systems approach to High Availability (HA) aimed at addressing the causes of downtime with functionality, design, or best practices. A variety of HA features and technologies are available for different network segments (from enterprise access to service provider core) in order to facilitate creation of end-to-end highly available networks.

Cisco IOS High Availability features and technologies can be categorized in three key areas:

System Level Resiliency—Cisco IOS software functionality that mitigates the impact of failures, including route processor, line card, and software component failures.

Network Level Resiliency—Cisco IOS software features that deliver faster network convergence, protection, and restoration.

Embedded Management for Resiliency—Cisco IOS Software features that deliver embedded intelligence for proactive fault and event management as well as configuration management.

The Cisco IOS High Availability Command Reference describes the commands covering these features and technologies.
