Configuring Downstream Channel IDs
Configuring Downstream Channel IDs
Feature Overview
This feature allows you to configure the downstream channel ID.
Benefits
When modems connect to the cable modem termination system (CMTS), they send the downstream channel ID—not the downstream frequency. By making the channel ID configurable, all modems in a hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) network have unique downstream channel IDs.

Usage Guidelines
IOS assigns the default value of each device in the order in which devices appear to the CMTS. IOS configures the first device with a default value of 1, the second device is configured with a value of 2, and so on. By assigning default values in this manner, a single CMTS guarantees unique channel IDs. However, this scheme does not guarantee unique channel IDs when more than one CMTS exists on a network.
Examples
The following example configures channel ID 44:
Router7200#cable downstream channel-id 44The next example restores the downstream channel id configuration to the default configuration:
Router7200#no cable downstream channel-id
