The Cisco 1720 router extends the leadership established by Cisco's 1700 series routers for small businesses and small branch offices, offering more functionality and flexibility for higher-end applications. In addition to meeting the needs of Internet and intranet access, the Cisco 1720 router offers the following key advantages:
•
Support for virtual private networking
•
Flexibility through modular architecture
•
Network device integration
The Cisco 1720 router offers the following key components:
•
One autosensing 10/100 Fast Ethernet port

IP Plus 40
•
IP Plus 56
•
IP/IPX
•
IP/IPX/ AT/IBM
•
IP/Firewall

IP/Firewall Plus IPSEC 56
•
IP/IPX/Firewall Plus
•
IP/IPX/AT/IBM/Firewall Plus IPSEC 56
•
IP Plus IPSEC 3DES
•
IP/Firewall Plus IPSEC 3DES
•
IP/IPX/AT/IBM/Firewall Plus IPSEC 3DES
Feature Set Tables
To determine what features are available with each feature set (software image), see . The table summarizes the features you can use when running a specific feature set on the Cisco 1700 series routers for Cisco IOS Release 12.0(1)XA. The feature set table uses the following symbol conventions to identify features:
•
Yes: the feature is offered in the feature set.
•
No: the feature is not offered in the feature set.
Note
This feature set table lists only new features. This table is not a cumulative or complete representation of all the features in each image. For a full list of all the features available in each image, refer to the Cisco Product Catalog.
New and Changed Information
The following sections list the new features supported by the Cisco 1700 series routers in Cisco IOS Release 12.0(1)XA.
New Features in Release 12.0(1)XA
The following new features in Cisco IOS Release 12.0(1)XA are available for the Cisco 1700 series. Release 12.0(1)XA also supports the features in Cisco IOS Release 12.0(1)T, which are described in the Release Notes for Cisco IOS Release 12.0 T. To access this document, see the section, "Related Documentation."
Support for Cisco 1720
This is the first Cisco IOS release to include support for the Cisco 1720.
Triple DES Encryption
IPSec supports the Triple DES encryption algorithm (168-bit) in addition to 56-bit encryption. Triple DES (3DES) is a strong form of encryption that allows sensitive information to be transmitted over untrusted networks. It enables customers, particularly in the finance industry, to utilize network layer encryption.
Open Caveats—Release 12.0(1)XA
This section describes possibly unexpected behavior by Release 12.0(1)XA. This section describes only severity 1 and 2 caveats.
In addition, some caveats in Cisco IOS Releases 12.0(1) T apply to Release 12.0(1)XA. For descriptions of Cisco IOS Release 12.0 T caveats, see the Cisco IOS Software Release 12.0 T Caveats. To access this document, see the section, "Related Documentation."
Dialer Interface
•
CSCdk46346
If a crypto map is applied to a dialer interface, dialer pools are used, and a dialup interface (e.g., BRI) is used as the physical interface, when that dialup interface is unbound from the dialer it may cause a system reload or mis-alignments. A workaround is to not use dialer pools.
BiSYNC/BSTUN
•
CSCdk29115
•
When BiSYNC/BSTUN is configured for passing ASCII data on 1T and 2T serial WICs, data transfer either fails or data gets corrupted. The only exception is when the data length is exactly 50 bytes. Passing EBCDIC data works fine.
