New and Changed Information
This release includes the NAM Traffic Analyzer application, which you can use for monitoring and troubleshooting the availability and health of your network. The NAM Traffic Analyzer is embedded in the NAM and provides browser-based access to the NAM RMON1, RMON2, SMON, DSMON, and voice-monitoring features.

We recommend only upgrades to NAM application image 3.1. We do not recommend downgrading from NAM 3.1 to an earlier application image.
–
If you do want to downgrade, we recommend that you first use a config clear command from the NAM CLI prior to the downgrade.
–
If you are using the WS-X6380-NAM, and you want to downgrade either the application or maintenance images, you must obtain a downgrade patch.
•
The 3.1 application image upgrade requires a special one-time extra reboot for optimal NAM 3.1 operation. Reboot the NAM immediately after logging in.
•
If you are using the WS-X6380-NAM, the upgrade to application image 3.1 also includes an automatic conversion of the maintenance image to 1.2(1b)m.
•
A Supervisor Engine 2 or better module is required for comprehensive supervisor-based VLAN traffic statistics.
Limitations and Restrictions
This section describes the limitations and restrictions for the Catalyst 6500 series NAM software release 3.1(1a):
•
Before using the NAM, read the Catalyst 6500 Series Switch and Cisco 7600 Series Internet Router Network Analysis Module Installation and Configuration Note.
•
If you change the NAM IP address, the default gateway resets to 0.0.0.0. Enter the new default gateway for the new IP address.
•
To use the NAM Traffic Analyzer, you must use either Netscape Navigator Release 4.76 or later or Internet Explorer Release 5.5 or later. For optimal performance, we recommend that you use Internet Explorer Release 5.5 with Service Pack 1 or 2.
•
These switch related caveats may cause problems with the NAM:

CSCea71694
The Autostate mechanism does not function on a Catalyst 6000 series switch running Cisco IOS software when a NAM 1 or NAM 2 module is installed and configured in the chassis. The VLAN interface remains in up-up state without any active ports reported by spanning-tree.
Workaround: Upgrade to a newer version of Cisco IOS that contains the fix.

CSCea36425
Sessions to modules fail if a Catalyst 6000 Series Switch running Cisco IOS software is configured with the ip telnet source-interface interface command and the specified interface is in an up-up state.
Workaround: Do not use the ip telnet source-interface command. Upgrade to a newer version of Cisco IOS that contains the fix.

Sometimes the NAM does not come online properly after a reset or physical re-insertion of the module if there is a firewall services module (FWSM) in the same chassis. This defect occurs with the FWSM software release 1.1(1).
Workaround: Upgrade FWSM module to version 1.1(3) or higher.

This section lists open caveats in the NAM software release 3.1(1a):

CSCeb14882
When you log into the NAM using Netscape browser version 4.7, the following error displays:
Bad Request. Your browser sent a request that this server could not understand.The error also displays when you click on Help on the upper right corner to invoke an online help window or click on the "View PDF" link under the contents area of the Online Help is accessed using a Netscape 4.7 browser (Windows and Solaris).
Workaround: Use Netscape version 7, Internet Explorer, or www.cisco.com.
•
CSCeb14867
When using Netscape 4.7, web pages that require you to enter a secret password or a community string, may take a very long time (30 seconds or more) to complete the request after pressing Apply/Submit. In some cases the NAM may not complete the request.
Workaround: Use another browser, such as Netscape version 7 or Internet Explorer. Also, the NAM CLI can be used as a workaround to add more web users or define the TACACS+ settings.

CSCeb14359
The differentiated services (diffserv) profile name and the aggregates may be displayed as blank when configuring differentiated services using multiple consoles, for example: web interface, CLI, SNMP, Generated reports for diffserv collections enabled on the same profile may also fail.
Workaround: From the NAM CLI use the show monitor diffserv and show diffserv aggregate commands to obtain the control index of the diffserv collections with blank profiles and aggregates. Delete these entries using the no monitor diffserv collection_type control_index and no diffserv aggregate control_index commands.
Alternatively, you may issue the config clear command from the NAM CLI and reboot. This alternative workaround is easier but may be undesirable as this procedure clears all collections and historical report data.
•
CSCeb14178
When using Netscape version 4.7 for the NAM Traffic Analyzer application, clicking the Next>Previous Period buttons in the View Report windows causes the screen to refresh without changing the report period. Netscape version 7 works as it should.
Workaround: Enter the date and time, and click Go.
•
CSCeb14103
The WS-X6380-NAM with NAM software version 3.1 does not shut down on a switch running Cisco IOS. When attempting to shutdown the NAM, the state changes from "Ok" to "Other" and then the switch displays a message indicating that the NAM is not responding. The state of the NAM does not change to "Shutdown."
Workaround: When the message indicating that the NAM is not responding is displayed on the switch console, you can power down the NAM from the switch CLI global configuration mode using this command:
(config)#no power enable module mod_num.•
CSCeb09127
The Reports Create wizard located under the Reports menu does not list the switch module and port details after a supervisor engine switchover on a Catalyst switch. This problem is seen only in the WS-SVC-NAM1 and WS-SVC-NAM2 NAM.
Workaround: Reset the NAM.

CSCeb09120
In Netscape version 7 on Solaris, when repeatedly switching back and forth between the capture settings screen and the decode screen, the packet decoder sometimes fails to respond. The java console shows threads and other exceptions.
Workaround: Close the browser window and reopen it.
•
CSCeb08913
After a NAM resets, the Application Statistics Alarms for user-defined protocols may be re-initialized to a different protocol than originally specified, or to no protocol at all.
This caveat may occur if an Application Statistics Alarm has been configured for a user-defined protocol when the NAM has populated one or more "auto learned" protocols.
Workaround: Delete the misconfigured alarm, and recreate it with the desired protocol.
•
CSCeb07504
After a Cisco IOS Restore Path Request (RPR+) switchover, the RMON Extensions for Switched Networks (SMON) VLAN statistics entries are not recreated with the same control index. The report fails to collect the VLAN data.
Workaround: Reset the NAM.
•
CSCea93640
When the reports included in Custom Reports are deleted, the Custom Report shows no data but does not display an error message.
Workaround: Update the Custom Report. Choose the Custom Reports > Edit menu.
•
CSCea80763
Although the NAM allows you to specify a community string for each trap destination and a community string when configuring alarm thresholds, SNMP traps generated by the alarm thresholds are sent to all trap destinations regardless of their configured community strings. This caveat occurs under all conditions.
Workaround: None.
•
CSCea65653
Sometimes the legend in the report popup window is too long and obscures a portion of the report data.
Workaround: Specify shorter report names. Choose the Basic Reports > Rename menu.
•
CSCea24898
While using the NAM CLI, if you use a "?" after a command argument or at the end of the command (to access Help), then the "Invalid Syntax" message is displayed.
Workaround: You can obtain help for a command by using a "?" or the "help" command before entering the command arguments.
•
CSCdx83603
After resetting the NAM, in some rare cases a filtered capture that was collecting packets before the reset will no longer collect the expected packets after the reset. This problem may occur if the capture filter is set to a protocol that you manually added to the protocol directory.
Workaround: Stop and restart the capture. Changing the capture filter settings is not necessary because restarting the capture corrects the problem.
Resolved Caveats Software Release 3.1(1a)
This section describes caveats that have been resolved in NAM software release 3.1(1a).
•
CSCeb44805
If the data capture buffer is too large (more than 40 MB) and the NAM is under high traffic or data-collection load, and you select Capture>Download>Save Buffer to File in the NAM GUI interface, you may not be able to save the captured data in buffer to a file. When this condition occurs, a blank screen appears and never comes back, and no error messages appear. This condition occurs only with the WS-X6380-NAM.
Workaround: This problem has been fixed in software release 3.1(1a) by increasing the timeout limit to 60 seconds. For a WS-X6380-NAM running software release 3.1(1), reduce the capture buffer size to 40 MB or below to fix this problem.
•
CSCeb44053
The NAM upgrade from the maintenance partition with the --install option fails and displays this error message:
The application image hard disk is corrupt.Installing the NAM application image from the maintenance partition using the--install option can fail if the partition table of the hard disk drive is corrupt or has not been initialized.
Note
The --install option reformats the entire hard disk drive.
This problem only applies to WS-SVC-NAM-1 and WS-SVC-NAM-2.
Workaround: This problem is fixed in software release 3.1(1a) and did not exist in software release 2.2(1a). Use either of those application images if you need the --install option, instead of software release 3.1(1).
•
CSCeb42942
The NAM SNMP agent does not respond or some NAM Web pages do not work after you enter a patch command from the NAM CLI. When you enter the patch command from the NAM CLI, the patch script may restart the RMON daemon (RMOND). Under rare circumstances, a race condition may occur when RMOND is asked to reread its configuration file while the daemon is still initializing. This condition can cause RMOND to crash with a segmentation fault.
Workaround: Reset the NAM or upgrade the NAM application image to 3.1(1a) where the problem is fixed.

CSCeb40488
When accessing the NAM Traffic Analyzer web interface using Netscape browser version 4.7x, you may receive "Bad Request" errors when browsing through various screens. For example, when you select:

Monitor>Diffserv>Traffic Stats and click the Report button
–
Monitor>Conversations and change the Rows per page value
–
Reports>Basic Reports Edit/Delete/View when the report name contains a space
Workaround: Use a different supported browser such as Netscape 7.x or Internet Explorer. You also can upgrade the application image to NAM 3.1(1a).

CSCeb40277
In the Alarms>NAM menu, entries may appear with incorrect values for voice-packet losses on monitored SCCP calls. These values may not match the values shown in the Monitor>Voice>Worst Quality SCCP calls window. This defect may occur from different conditions depending upon the packet loss values that are reported by the SCCP phones to their Call Managers.
Workaround: Upgrade the NAM to application image 3.1(1a).

Packets containing the following specific port or protocol combinations are not parsed correctly by the NAM, and may produce unexpected results on the Monitor/Apps web page and in the protocolDistStatsTable MIB table:

UDP/102This defect occurs whenever the port or protocol combinations are spanned to the NAM or observed in the NDE flow records.
Workaround: Upgrade the NAM software to release 3.1(1a).

This section lists open caveats in the NAM software release 3.1(1):
•
CSCeb44805
