Installing the SmartFilter Administration Software


This chapter describes installation of the SmartFilter administration components. The SmartFilter administration components include the SmartFilter Administration Server software and SmartFilter Administration Console software. This chapter contains the following sections:

System Requirements

The following system prerequisites must be met to install and operate the SmartFilter Administration software on a UNIX platform:

Server system running one of the following UNIX platforms:

Red Hat Linux i386 7.x

Solaris SPARC 7/8

Minimum of 30 MB of disk space

One of the following X Window System managers: fvwm, fvwm2, olwm, or dtwm

The following system prerequisites must be met to install and operate the SmartFilter Administration software on a Windows 2000 server:

Minimum of 30 MB of disk space

Monitor with 800 x 600 pixel resolution

Service Pack 2 (for Windows 2000)

Downloading the SmartFilter Administration Software

To use SmartFilter's remote administration feature, you must download and install both the Administration Server and the Administration Console. You need to install the Administration Server only once, but can install the Administration Console any number of times.

You can copy and install the SmartFilter Administration Server and Administration Console from the Cisco Systems software CD that accompanied the Cisco Content Engine, or you can download and install it from the Cisco Systems Cisco.com website. To obtain the SmartFilter Server and Administration Console software, follow these steps:


Step 1 Obtain the SmartFilter Administration Console software by:

a. Copying it to your local or network host from the Cisco Systems software CD that accompanied the Cisco Content Engine.

b. Linking to the Cisco Systems Cisco.com website using your web browser and entering your Cisco.com login username and password to download it.

Step 2 Locate the following compressed files on your Cisco Systems software CD, or download in binary format the appropriate compressed file for your operating system.

Administration Server for Windows: sf312_w2k_adminserver.exe

Administration Server for Solaris: sf312_sol8_adminserver.tar.gz

Administration Server for Red Hat Linux: sf312_lin7_adminserver.tar.gz

Administration Console for Windows: sf312_w2k_adminconsole.exe

Administration Console for Solaris: sf312_sol8_adminconsole.tar.gz

Administration Console for Red Hat Linux: sf312_lin7_adminconsole.tar.gz

Step 3 See the next section, "Installing the SmartFilter Administration Server," or the "Installing the SmartFilter Administration Console" section for your UNIX or Windows operating system, respectively.


Installing the SmartFilter Administration Server

The following sections provide the procedures to install the SmartFilter Administration Server on a UNIX or Windows operating system.

UNIX Installation

To install the SmartFilter Administration Server on a UNIX operating system network host, follow these steps:


Step 1 Uncompress the SmartFilter software distribution .tar file using the following commands.

Solaris:

gunzip sf312_sol8_adminserver.tar.gz
tar xvf sf312_sol8_adminserver.tar

Linux:

gunzip sf312_lin7_adminserver.tar.gz
tar xvf sf312_lin7_adminserver.tar

Step 2 Change directory to the smartfilter-3.1.2/server directory.

Step 3 Run the install script by entering the following command from the smartfilter-3.1.2/server directory.

sh install_sf.sh

The main installation screen appears with the following options:

1 Install SF Admin Server

2 License Agreement

q Quit

Step 4 Choose the option: 1 Install SF Admin Server. The Accept License Agreement screen appears.

Step 5 Press Enter to accept the license agreement and continue with the installation, or press E to exit to the main installation screen.

Step 6 Specify the directory where you want to install the Administration Server and press Enter.

If you are installing this software for the first time, proceed to Step 7.

If you are upgrading from an earlier release, a message appears about installing console components. A second message appears, indicating that the installation is complete.


Note If you are upgrading from an earlier release, a message appears about installing server components. A second message appears saying installation is complete.


Step 7 Specify the user who is to own the configuration files for SmartFilter.

Press Enter to accept the default of Nobody.

or

Enter a name and press Enter.

Step 8 Enter the case-sensitive license activation key.

Enter the activation key and press Enter.

or

Press Enter to continue with the installation. A message appears, saying that you have not entered an activation key. It asks whether you want to enter one now. Type N and press Enter.

Step 9 Enter the action that you want to occur when the licence expires, and press Enter.

Press A and Enter to allow all HTTP traffic in the event of a Control List or subscription expiration.

Press D and Enter to deny all HTTP traffic in the event of a Control List or subscription expiration.

Step 10 Specify the Administration Server administrator username and password.

a. Press Enter to accept the default of sfadmin for the Administration Server administrator username.

b. Press Enter to accept the default of sfadmin for the Administration Server administrator password.

c. Press Y and Enter to confirm the use of sfadmin for the Administration Server password.


Note If you do not use the default, you need to enter an alternative username and password, and then press Enter to continue with the Administration Server installation process.


Step 11 Complete the installation.

If you are running the installation as root, no further action is required. A message appears, indicating that installation is complete.

If you are not running the installation as root, you must run the following script as the root user after this installation script is finished:

sh install directory / sfadmin_setup

A message appears, indicating that the Administration Server is being installed. A second message appears, indicating that the installation is complete.


Windows Installation

To install the SmartFilter Administration Server on a Windows 2000 operating system network host, follow these steps:


Step 1 Run sf312_w2k_adminserver.exe.

The WinZip dialog box appears.

Step 2 Click Setup.

A setup program starts and the Welcome window appears.

Step 3 Click Next.

The Software License Agreement window appears.

Step 4 Click Yes to accept the license agreement.

The Information window appears.


Note If you click No in the License Agreement window, the installation process ends.


Step 5 Review the Information window carefully and then click Next.

If you are installing the SmartFilter Administration Server for the first time, the Choose Destination window appears. Proceed to Step 6.

If you are upgrading from an earlier release, a message appears, asking whether you want to update to the newer release. Click Yes. A message appears telling you that the registry settings are being updated. Click OK. A message appears, indicating that the upgrade was successfully completed.

If you already have Release 3.1.2 installed and you are reinstalling Release 3.1.2, a message appears, asking whether you want to reinstall Release 3.1.2. Click Yes. Proceed to Step 7 to enter the activation key.


Note If you choose to re-install Release 3.1.2 over an existing Release 3.1.2, you are required to redefine each of your configuration settings.


Step 6 Accept the default destination and then click Next.

The Activation Key window appears.

Step 7 Enter the case-sensitive activation key in the field provided and then click Next.

If you enter the activation key incorrectly or if you leave the field blank, a message appears, indicating that you can enter the activation key later, after installation.

Click Yes to return to the Activation Key window and enter the activation key.

Click No to enter the activation key after the installation process is complete.

The Action After Expiration window appears.

Step 8 Click the radio button that represents the action that you want to occur if either the SmartFilter Control List or the subscription expires.

To allow all HTTP traffic in the event of a Control List or subscription expiration, click Allow All. This is the default action.

To deny all HTTP traffic in the event of a Control List or subscription expiration, click Deny All.

Then click Next.

The Administrator Setup window appears.

Step 9 Enter the administrator username and password you have created, reenter the password to confirm it, and then click Next.

If you do not enter information in this window, a message appears, warning that if you do not enter information in the window, default values (sfadmin/sfadmin) are assigned to the administrator account.

Click Yes to accept the default values.

Click No to return to the Administrator Setup window and enter the information.

The SmartFilter Administration Server Setup window appears.

Step 10 Review the information in the SmartFilter Administration Server Setup window.

If you want to change any of the settings, click Back.

If you are satisfied with the settings, click Next. An installation message appears, followed by the Setup Complete window.

Step 11 Click Finish.

Step 12 Installation of the SmartFilter Administration Server is complete. The WinZip self-extractor dialog box disappears after a few moments. Do not click Cancel.


Installing the SmartFilter Administration Console

To use the SmartFilter remote administration feature, you must also install the Administration Console. Follow these procedures to install the SmartFilter Administration Console on a UNIX or Windows operating system.


Note The SmartFilter Administration Server software and the SmartFilter Administration Console software do not have to operate on the same platform.


UNIX Installation

To install the SmartFilter Administration Console on a UNIX operating system network host, follow these steps:


Step 1 Uncompress the SmartFilter software distribution .tar file using the following commands.

Solaris:

gunzip sf312_admin_sol8.tar.gz 
tar -xvf sf312_admin_sol8.tar.gz 

Linux:

gunzip sf312_admin_lin7.tar.gz 
tar -xvf sf312_admin_lin7.tar.gz 

Step 2 Change directory to the smartfilter-3.1.2/console directory.

Step 3 Run the install script by entering the following command from the smartfilter-3.1.2/console directory:

sh install_sf.sh


Note You must execute this command as root user.


The main installation screen appears with the following options:

1 Install SF Admin Console

2 License Agreement

q Quit

Step 4 Choose option 1 Install SF Admin Console.

The Accept License Agreement window appears.

Step 5 Press Enter to accept the license agreement and continue with the installation, or press E to exit to the previous window to review the license agreement.

Step 6 Enter the directory path for the SmartFilter Administration Console and press Enter.


Note Neither a default path nor a recommended path is given by the installation program.


If you are installing the Administration Console for the first time, proceed to Step 7.

If you are upgrading from an earlier release to a newer release, a message appears about installing console components. A second message appears, indicating that the installation is complete.

Step 7 Specify the user who is to own the configuration files for SmartFilter.

Press Enter to accept the default of Nobody.

or

Enter a name and press Enter.

A message appears, indicating that the Administration Console is being installed. A second message appears, indicating that the installation is complete.


To launch the SmartFilter Administration Console for the first time and begin configuring the SmartFilter software, proceed to the "Starting the SmartFilter Administration Console the First Time" section.

Windows Installation

To install the SmartFilter Administration Console on a Windows NT or Windows 2000 operating system network host, follow these steps:


Step 1 Run sf312_w2k_adminconsole.exe.

The WinZip dialog box appears.

Step 2 Click Setup.

A setup program starts and the Welcome window appears.

Step 3 Click Next.

The Software License Agreement window appears.

Step 4 Click Yes to accept the License Agreement. The Information window appears.


Note If you click No in the License Agreement window, the installation process ends.


Step 5 Review the Information window carefully and then click Next.

If you are installing the SmartFilter Administration Console for the first time, the Choose Destination window appears. Proceed to Step 6.

If you are upgrading from and earlier release, a message appears, asking whether you want to update to Release 3.1.2. Click Yes. A message appears, indicating that the upgrade was successfully completed.


Note If you already have Release 3.1.2. installed and are reinstalling Release 3.1.2, the list of Administration Servers that appears in the Configure Admin Servers window of the SmartFilter Administration Console is deleted.


Step 6 Accept the default destination and then click Next.

The Setup Complete window appears.

Step 7 Click Finish.


To launch the SmartFilter Administration Console for the first time and begin configuring the SmartFilter software, proceed to the "Starting the SmartFilter Administration Console the First Time" section.

Uninstalling the SmartFilter Administration Software on a Windows Platform

To uninstall the SmartFilter Administration components, follow these steps:

Uninstalling the SmartFilter Administration Server


Step 1 Choose Settings > Control Panel.

Step 2 Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

Step 3 Choose SmartFilter Administration Server from the list.

Step 4 Click Change/Remove.

The SmartFilter Administration Server is removed.


Uninstalling the SmartFilter Administration Console


Step 1 Choose Settings > Control Panel.

Step 2 Double-click Add/Remove Programs.

Step 3 Choose SmartFilter Administration Console from the list.

Step 4 Click Change/Remove.

The SmartFilter Administration Console is removed.
