Troubleshooting the Boot Process


This appendix provides information about troubleshooting the boot process for the Cisco 11000 series CSS. For details about powering on and booting the specific CSS platform, including the various boot states and the Status LEDs, refer to Chapter 1, Booting, Logging In, and Getting Started.

During the CSS boot process, the SCM downloads software to the SFM or SFM2 and the I/O modules. If the boot process cannot locate the correct files, the CSS logs an error in the boot.log file. Refer to Chapter 8, Using the CSS Logging Features for information on boot.log.

Table C-1 provides suggestions for correcting problems that may occur during the boot process. If the suggestions in Table C-1 do not resolve your problem, contact the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC).

Symptom
Recommended Action

Boot diagnostic failed

Check boot.log for error messages that may specify which component is faulty.

Boot process failed

Check boot.log for error messages that may specify where in the process the boot sequence failed.

Boot image is corrupt

Reload the ADI file (refer to Chapter 3, Managing the CSS Software for information).

Cannot locate boot record

Check the boot record configuration in the Offline DM menu (refer to Appendix B, Using the Offline Diagnostic Monitor Menu for information). Reconfigure the boot record configuration if necessary.
