Public Services Network

What is the Public Services Network?

The Public Services Network (PSN) programme aims to revolutionise the way in which the Public Services accesses ICT services.

Rather than different public bodies designing, developing, installing and maintaining their own networks, the PSN will be a ‘network of networks’, created from existing commercial networks, yet conforming to common technical, security and service management standards.

In addition the PSN programme covers the converged services that will run over the network or networks – namely voice, video, collaboration and messaging.

But PSN will be more than just a network: it is a truly transformational programme designed to create an open, collaborative environment for all UK public service employees – and change the way Government Departments and Agencies, Local Authorities and the non-profit service buy and use Voice and Data Networks.

The number one objective of Government for the PSN is to drive down costs, and by 2014, PSN should contribute at least £631 million per year in savings to the Government’s efficiency and reform programme.

Every public services organisation’s transition to PSN will be unique and comprise different steps.
