It is commonly assumed that ICT contributes 2% of global carbon emissions; however this may be higher in developed countries. Whilst there is a significant amount that can be done to reduce the direct impact of ICT, technology can have a much more positive impact on carbon reduction. There are two broad categories for consideration: efficiencies and transformation:
Efficiencies
Maximising the use of existing and procured resources to ensure a reduction in the environmental impact of ICT. For example:
Virtualisation Technology can help NHS organisations to maximise the use of their ICT while minimising power and cooling requirements, reducing the overall energy footprint.
Cisco Energywise technology can make use of the network to track, monitor and control the power utilisation of network-connected devices and systems. This includes IP Phones, Wireless Access Points and can extend to peripherals and Building Management Systems.
Transformation
Changing the way people and organisations work through the proactive use of ICT. For example:
Technology supports virtual resources whether this is remote clinicians, translation services or self-help. High Definition video solutions can provide a real-time high-quality experience - either to provide remote access to primary care, or potential outbound specialist services from a hospital. This can save on travel, time and costs.
By adopting a homeworking policy, non-critical staff can work remotely to reduce staff travel. Today's packaged solutions offer a homeworking environment with the look and feel of a normal office environment, including video and collaboration tools.
Collaboration technologies allow documents, presentations, images and case notes to be shared across the network, supporting virtual conferences and other meetings without the need for travel.
By placing ICT at the core of an organisation's strategy for sustainable healthcare means that technology can be used to reduce carbon emissions rather than contribute to them.
