Cisco in Defence

The Cisco specialised Defence division has a mission to deliver world class communications solutions and leadership, to help the UK Armed Forces and security agencies achieve successful operations, through:

  • A deep understanding of operational drivers
  • Unparalleled investment in innovation
  • A genuine and enduring commitment to the MOD

We also provide clear value with our ability to offer standards-based solutions that are easy to integrate within the MOD's overall architecture. In fact, our footprint across UK Government departments allows us to deliver a holistic approach, enabling more connected and coherent inter-agency operations.
The Cisco in Defence brochure will give you a clear and comprehensive picture of how Cisco battle-winning technology can become an invaluable member of the team, both in Britain and abroad. The brochure describes examples of Cisco in action and illustrates the solutions we're investing in to drive capability and effectiveness even further.
You can download the brochure here and discover the potential benefits of joined-up defence through networked services and solutions from Cisco.

Capability Platforms

Introduction
The considerable demands that the Government and the nation place on the Armed Forces and intelligence agencies show no signs of easing. The continued use of the UK Defence community in an uncertain world ensures increasing demand for rapidly delivered and coherent capability solutions. Cisco is constantly innovating network and communications solutions that aim to facilitate the best possible outcomes in all operational situations.
Consultancy
- COLLAPSE
Cisco Special Advisors can help to formulate and plan aligned IT strategies using given objectives and organisational plans. We can consult or help de-risk a specific project, and we can help you integrate our consulting engineers as part of your day-to-day virtual team. Cisco Advisory Services can provide support across the entire network lifecycle.
Command and Control
+ EXPAND
Information and communications are at the heart of every defence operation, so the speed and accuracy of their delivery are crucial. The role of the Defence Information Infrastructure (DII) is to ensure the deployment and support of a single information infrastructure to serve defence, replacing separate or legacy systems currently in use. Cisco technologies are driving new capabilities, to help enable an intelligent, highly secure, adaptive and optimised infrastructure from business space to battle space.
Maritime
+ EXPAND
Traditional maritime networking would have called for a high number of separate infrastructures for the distribution of weapons systems, navigation, voice, video, television, and entertainment system traffic. However, using modern best practice architectures and products, Cisco converged services allow for highly reliable communications across a greatly reduced number of secure networks aboard the ships, which are able to connect administration, navigation and weapon systems.
Air, Space and Cyberspace
+ EXPAND
Cisco is adding new and enhanced capabilities, linking space with the commercial communications and small satellite markets and extending IP technology to infrastructure protection, disaster recovery, mobility, broadband, and other services. Cisco TelePresence is an example of a technology that can be delivered effectively via satellite. The Cisco TelePresence service uses Ultra High Definition video technology to create a virtual meeting environment using life-size imaging and spatial audio. This allows senior members of staff in the UK to talk to operational commanders in theatre, while giving them the ability to read body language and ensure that messages are understood.
Ground Manoeuvre
+ EXPAND
At Cisco our aim is to ensure military vehicles are IP enabled in the battle space to create a ubiquitous mobile network. This can provide the vehicles with all the benefits and increased capability of a networked battle space, so that soldiers in the field can receive highly secure video or view maps using IP phone screens, allowing commanders to give support in real time. The Future Integrated Soldier Technology (FIST) is designed to integrate a modular system of all equipment, weapons and their sighting systems, as well as radios carried by the individual soldier.
Logistics
+ EXPAND
The Future Logistics Information Services Delivery Programme (FLIS DP) is a major activity that aims to transform defence logistics to deliver operational and financial benefits. FLIS DP will simplify the management and delivery of Logistic Information Services by appointing a single Prime Systems Integrator (PSI) with responsibility for Defence Logistic Transformation. This initiative will enable staff to centrally manage the fleet of equipment, store and issue equipment efficiently, and increase equipment availability to achieve Force Elements at Readiness with reduced fleets.
Infrastructure Training
+ EXPAND
The Cisco Connected Real Estate solution is a framework that could ultimately transform the MOD's estate. It can help reduce both operational costs and physical real estate, whilst introducing organisational flexibility. New technology is already helping distance learning, and these new methods will be used to enable Defence trainees to learn at their own pace, without having to attend a traditional educational facility.
Homeland Security
+ EXPAND
At the heart of Homeland Security, or Public Safety, is the ability to have the right information, at the right place, at the right time. Just as importantly, it needs to be presented in the right way to help clear decision making. A network-based approach to homeland security and public safety communications can help Government agencies and disaster response organisations to respond more effectively and efficiently to unpredictable challenges. Cisco Unified Communications has a track record in applying technology to deliver business transformation across all industries and sectors, and it can be utilised to support organisations, government agencies and individuals in meeting today's challenges in Homeland Security.
Medical
+ EXPAND
Cisco can bring its experience in the NHS to Defence. We can offer a complete end-to-end network solution for every healthcare environment extending from the data centre to patient, operational and offsite facilities, speciality clinics and research labs. Translated to a military environment, the benefits are obvious. Other defence focused medical solutions include Cisco TelePresence for remote consultations and Data Centre integration for large amounts of medical data.
