Hamburg reports smooth sailing for citizens

Hamburg is northern Europe's most important transport hub, with global trade volumes growing each year. Local network infrastructure could make or break the delivery of reliable services and transport links for the city’s biggest moneymaker and job provider.

But the Hamburg Port Authority isn’t sweating the 13 percent average annual shipment growth. And Hamburg’s city officials don’t fear for the nearly 200,000 people that rely on the smooth sailing of port vicinity operations. Why? Because they have a digital-ready network and an IT strategy that integrate traffic management by land and sea. This allows Hamburg’s citizens to travel more easily and port operations to run more efficiently, and it prepares the entire city for growth for decades to come.

The network behind the port

In order to be proactive with its traffic control systems, the Hamburg Port Authority needed a reliable, secure, and integrated network. Four networks consolidated to develop a fibre-optic backbone. And a broader network throughout the port supports 300 sensors for roadways and for incoming ship traffic. This intelligent network helps port operations run smoothly without disrupting the daily life of Hamburg residents.
