Compatibility Information for IM and Presence Service on Cisco Unified Communications Manager

Compatibility Information for IM and Presence Service on Cisco Unified Communications Manager

Hardware Compatibility

In Release 10.0(1) and later, Cisco supports only virtualized deployments of IM and Presence Service on Cisco Unified Computing System servers, or on a Cisco-approved third-party server configuration. In Release 10.0(1) and later, Cisco does not support deployments of IM and Presence Service on Cisco Media Convergence Server servers

For more information about the deployment of IM and Presence Service in a virtualized environment, see http://docwiki.cisco.com/wiki/Unified_Communications_in_a_Virtualized_Environment.

The following table shows the VMware that IM and Presence Service supports for Release 10.x.

User Capacities

Number of IM and Presence Users Supported

The following table identifies the number of users that IM and Presence Service Release 10.x can sustain for Cisco Unified Communications mode depending on your OVA type and your deployment strategy.

Table 4 User Capacities for Cisco Unified Communications Mode
Cisco Unified Communications Mode
Deployment Model OVA Number of users supported Number of users supported - guaranteed High Availability
Single Node 500 500 -
Single Node (BE6K only) 1000 1000 -
Single Node 2000 2000 -
Single Node 5000 5000 -
Single Node 15000 15000 -

Multi-Node Cluster (6 nodes) 5000 15000 15000
Multi-Node Cluster (6 nodes) 15000 45000 45000

IM Only OVA Usage

If you deploy IM and Presence Service with IM-only users, you can increase the number of users per OVA. For example, if you deploy a 5000 user OVA with 1000 full Unified Communications (UC) users, then the remaining space for 4000 users can be multiplied by 1.67 to determine the maximum number of IM-only users, as follows:

OVA type 5000 users
Full UC users 1000
Remaining space 4000
Maximum number of IM-only users (4000 x 1.67) 6667
Total users for this example

(Full UC users and IM-only users)

7667

The formula for calculating the total number of full UC users and IM-only users within a deployment is as follows:

(full UC users) + ((total OVA users - full UC users) x 1.67) = total supported users

If you are deploying two or more nodes in your IM and Presence Service installation, use the IM and Presence Service multi-node feature and ensure that your hardware and OVA are compatible with this feature. This is necessary for both a fresh installation and an upgrade of IM and Presence Service.

See the Configuration and Administration of IM and Presence Service on Cisco Unified Communications Manager for more information about specific multi-node deployment strategies and hardware support information for a multi-node deployment.

Number of Microsoft Users Supported for Remote Call Control

The Cisco Unified Communications Manager configuration that you use determines how many users are supported when interoperating with a Microsoft client for Remote Call Control. Remote Call Control is a unique deployment mode for IM and Presence Service Service which enables Microsoft users to control Cisco IP Telephony endpoints. This is a separate and independent deployment mode from standard IM and Presence Service functions. The IM and Presence Service server is required only as the gateway and does not limit user capacity. The following table identifies the number of Microsoft users that are supported per node and per cluster.

Note

Capacity numbers for Remote Call Control interoperability are defined based on Cisco Unified Communications Manager, not IM and Presence Service. IM and Presence Service is required to provide the CSTA Gateway, or connection between Microsoft and Cisco Unified Communications Manager, that communicates the Remote Call Control functions and statuses.
Table 5 Microsoft Interoperability

5 A maximum of 2 IM and Presence Service nodes in a cluster is supported.

For more detailed sizing analysis of the CTI connection support that is used to support Remote Call Control on Cisco Unified Communications Manager, see the Cisco Unified Communications Sizing Tool at http://tools.cisco.com/cucst.
